E'naer was confused. He had no idea how to react to the newest addition to Weyrling wing. He never even heard of this kind of situation: A wingleader denoted to weyrling wing. So, his tone was guarded when he gestured the bronzerider to sat down: "Hello, U'kaiah. I'm gland you came. Please sit down." "Thank you," the bronzerider nodded as he took the offered seat. He couldn't muster a genuine smile, but he was pretty sure he wouldn't be expected to under the circumstances.
"Umh, I'm supposed to give you your assignment. You'll be teaching Fall formations to senior weyrlings," E'naer said uncomfortably and slid a file over his desk. He gave it a little too much push and it slid directly to U'kaiah's lap. U'kaiah looked up at the greenrider as he picked the hides off his legs.
"Thank you," he said dryly. **I don't blame him. I wouldn't want a trouble maker in my wing either.**
The older greenrider just watched him in silence for a long while. Then he suddenly blurted out: "U'kaiah, I've known you since you were a little boy. I believe I caught you kissing my little sister once when she was ten and you were thirteen. What the shells were you thinking when you attacked your underling!" "Well, obviously you weren't thinking," E'naer admitted. "What made you snap like that?" "I believe she had just turned eleven," U'kaiah said in a vain attempt at lightening the mood. "I don't know, E'naer. As you say, I wasn't thinking."
"I've always thought you were the ambitious, determined type, not the rash, brawling type," E'naer was now scolding him. U'kaiah at first felt a flash of anger that a greenrider Wingthird would see fit to reprimand a Wingleader, but he quickly reminded himself that E'naer outranked him now. "I guess I haven't been myself lately."
"Darn right about that," E'naer muttered. He rested his elbows against the desk top, crossed his fingers and leaned his chin against the crossed fingers. "Do you want to talk about it? I'm not a mindhealer but I'm good listener." The bronzerider shrugged. "There's really nothing to talk about, E'naer. I just... cracked. I don't know why. It just happened is all."
"Nothing just happens. Violence always has it reasons. And now I am sounding like sharding mindhealer and not like a wingthird," E'naer said and grinned self-consciously. "I suppose I should tell you: never do that again, but you already know it." "Yes. I think the Weyrleader said the same thing." It was starting to become a familiar conversation in fact. 'U'kaiah, why did you do it?' 'U'Kaiah, what happened to you?' 'U'kaiah, if you want to talk about it...' Shards but it was annoying. No he didn't want to talk about it.
No, he didn't know why it happened. And no, it would never happen again. Perhaps he should just have it embroidered on a tunic and save everyone time...
"Then I don't have to tell it again." The bronzerider nodded. "I'm just here for my assignment."
"And you have gotten it. That's all then," E'naer said with resigned tone. If the man didn't want to talk, he didn't want to talk and pushing him didn't make it better. "Thank you. Was there anything else... sir?"
"No, not today." E'naer had a feeling that working with U'kaiah wouldn't be easy.
