"Hi, Vee." Milga's head peered in. "I'm showing my cousin around the hall,
wanna join us? We can go out to play after that," she asked.
Of course she would. Veerona looked for any chance to escape her daily
routine of harper lessons, chores, play, and sleep. She was reading
a lot so that took up some time, but she didn't like being home very much
since so many things were changing around her and she couldn't
make them stop. So she had taken to retreating or escaping. "Sure!" Shoving
her feet into her boots, she hurried to follow after Milga.
"Vee, meet my cousin Feydal, he's staying here for a bit. Fey, this is my
friend, Veerona." Milga introduced them.
"Hi, little fish," Feydal grinned. He did indeed resemble Milga, with the
same, slanted brown eyes, black hair and slender build. Major difference
was that while Milga's hair was shiny, straight and neat, his was coarse,
sticking out to every direction and shaggy. "I am a seacrafter, which Millie
forgot to mention. My ma is her pa's sister. Of course, she doesn't talk
much inna first place while I talk for two."
When he stopped to breath, Milga added: " for ten, he talks for ten peoples
worth."
Taking his measure and standing conspicuously close to Milga, Veerona gave a
small smile at the joke. "I thought seacrafters stayed on the sea. This
is land, you know."
"I know," Feydal said ruefully. "Our ship hit some rough weather and we had
to limp here for repairs. I'm afraid I'm landlocked until the ship's
repaired. Which might take whole sevenday or longer," he continued.
"It's going to be a very long sevenday," Milga murmured and then nudged Vee.
"Come on, let's give him a sightseeing tour."
"Do you like being a seacrafter?" she asked curiously while she walked along
with both of them. Veerona hadn't spoken to many older boys besides the ones
in her harper lessons. She wondered about this one's demeanor. Since he was
related to Milga, he was probably safe. He also seemed a bit fun and she had
the urge to giggle at his antics.
"Yes, I like it. My pa's a seacrafter as well as his pa before him and his
grandpa. Kinda runs in the family," Feydal replied to the little girl. He
generally got along well with children.
"My Ma was a dolphineer. Da is...was...a rider.." She sounded a bit too
unsure about that. She'd never had anything to do with the man and didn't
know if he still lived or not with Fall happening now. Shrugging her small
shoulders, she thought it was nice to have so much family. Veerona didn't
know anything about her grandparents. She didn't know if Lany knew. Maybe
she did.
"A dragonrider? That's impressive," Feydal said with low whistle. "No riders
in our family, isn't that right, Millie?"
"None that I've heard of," Milga agreed.
"Everyone keeps asking me what I want to be when I get bigger. I don't know
yet. Milga, do you like being a dolphineer?" She hoped she did since she did
it all the time. Feeling secure between the two of them, she kept holding
their hands anyway.
"Yes, I like being a dolphineer. I plan to become a master dolphineer and
run a hall one day," Milga answered. She was ambitious.
"Famell, beware," Feydal intoned with an ominous voice.
"Master Famell will be retired by then," Milga wasn't stupid. She knew how
long it would take to reach that position. She also knew that her cousin was
just trying to be funny.
"And you don't understand kidding around even if it bit you on the nose,"
Feydal complained.
"Do you think someday they might let ladies craft all the time if they
wanted everywhere like before?" Vee hadn't remembered those days but they
had told her about it and she believed them. She didn't understand why women
had stopped crafting in the first place.
"You can only hope they will," Milga replied.
"Maybe Master Famell should have a Conclave with the others and they could
decide, you know." Vee had been learning about how that worked some in her
harper lessons and to her it seemed easy. After all, if they had the power,
they could make it so, couldn't they?
"That's not so simple, little flit," Feydal said. "It's the craftmaster who
decides if the craft accepts female crafters and not all the crafts are
ready to open the door for girls. Just the northern aligned halls, like
dolphin hall and technicians' hall."
"Lany said I could be a harper if I wanted. They have girls too now." That
had stuck in her mind, for sure. Veerona didn't know if it was something she
wanted, though. There were so many things and so much time left to choose.
"Oh, yeah, I forgot the harper hall," Feydal said.
"That happens when you don't shut up long enough to think," Milga said and
flashed a grin at her cousin.
Quiet for the moment, Vee followed and let Milga show her cousin around. She
just listened, enjoying the banter between the two of them. Then she began
to wonder. What if she had cousins somewhere? She didn't know. Would it be
like this if she ever met them? Should she ask Lany? Most holders grew up
with big families. She found herself being envious of it.
