Planning Ahead

Characters: D'lorn, F'lin
Description: This interview goes a little better.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 17 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Lanniya, A'dryn

He had set up another appointment after a few days of thought and going over the rosters. Maybe this one would go better than the last one. At the least, D'lorn wasn't giving up. This was important, despite its very intimate nature.

There was a knock at the door, then F'lin poked his head inside and smiled. "Hi, D'lorn. You wanted to see me?"

"Aye I did. Please have a seat F'lin." D'lorn hadn't had the training of this youngster but he knew of his reputation. And he also knew his antecedents as it were. Not a bad choice, either, if he had to make one. The greenrider prepared himself for the interview, hoping it went smoothly.

The bronzerider shut the door and did as asked. He'd been dying of curiosity since he'd heard that the Weyrlingmaster Third wanted to speak with him since they didn't often cross paths. "What can I do for you?"

"Not really me, per se." He cleared his throat and launched into it. "So as you know we have a weyrling class that is approaching mating flight time. As always, the weyrling staff is standing by to advise them should they require recommendations. Unlike usual, though, we have a gold weyrling in training. Naturally, we want there to be a safe outcome for her and her dragon when the time comes. Hopefully, she will be prepared and ready. When we went over names as to possible options, yours came up. You're a bronzerider of good standing, weyrbred, and young enough to be closer to her in turns but old enough to understand how important it is."

By now, he was sure F'lin understood what he was talking about. "Basically, if she comes to us for options, we are trying to figure out who we can offer her. That way there are no bad approaches made or misunderstandings. Just as we do with the other weyrlings."

"Um." That was not what he'd anticipated. F'lin blinked, then looked away as he thought. Lanniya was young, only fifteen if he remembered rightly. But
that wouldn't matter when Anaeryth took to the skies for the first time. Still, it felt a little... dirty, setting her up like this. **But only if she'd want to,** he told himself. **Her choice.** Maybe she'd sort herself out on her own. Hopefully.

Or... maybe she wouldn't, and D'lorn was right-- she'd need someone. And if it had to be someone, why _not_ him? Sometimes golds chose based on their riders' preferences-- although with Anaeryth's first flight she was just as likely to be caught. But if she did choose, and if Lanniya had a preference, he'd be in a better position to move up the ranks later. Catching a gold tended to get you noticed. He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. "All right. I can do that, if it comes up. If she wants to."

Nodding solemnly, D'lorn made a small note on his hide. "Thank you F'lin. If the time comes, I'll let you know. Of course since the golds tend to wait longer to rise, it may not be for some time. Hopefully, after they /between/ things will just take care of themselves."

"Hopefully." She was still really young... F'lin shifted uncomfortably in his seat. This sort of arrangement happened in the Weyr, but he'd never expected to have it happen to _him_. And Lanniya... what would she think of it all? What was she even like? He'd never even met her. "Is there anything else I should be aware of?"

"She's trader bred like me so there's a very good chance that coupled with that and her turns, she's completely untried. She's not really the one I'm worried over though. We have a male greenrider I'm working with. He will need special handling." D'lorn knew F'lin wouldn't be interested in that but if his bronze chased Nalarith when the time came, it might be good to have warning.

F'lin nodded. "I see." It was his first time in a Weyrlingmasters' office since he'd graduated, and he wasn't sure if that was the sort of thing that Weyrlingmasters tended to share or if he was being unbearably Holdbred again. Or if they'd talked about him like that when he was a weyrling. Either way, he hoped that D'lorn wouldn't see through the aura of confidence he was trying to project. "I'll keep that in mind if Seneth chases greens with male weyrlings."

"Aye. Other than that, I don't have anything else. Thank you for coming and my best to you and Seneth." Perhaps in the future, he could call on F'lin to drop ropes for the senior drills. He'd have to make a note of that.

"Anytime, Weyrlingmaster." F'lin rose and managed a grin. "Clear skies."
