}: Haloth, are you still with the eggs? :{ Luneth's voice was soft,
but troubled. She hadn't seen much of Haloth lately, especially after
the eggs were laid on the Sands. His rider was also busy, but
hopefully not too busy now. }: I need your help. Faucheth and Hers are
throwing firestone and mine needs the good drink for her stomach. :{
Luneth didn't know who else to ask that wasn't busy and the nausea
that swelled from Ninaine was making her own stomach churn in empathy.
Distracted, Luneth continued. }: Mine keeps disgorging her food
because of her egg and can't get up. :{
Haloth dutifully sent the message to his rider though it might not
have come through exactly as intended. }:Luneth's is sick becuse of
her egg.:{
**What are you talking about?** N'call asked puzzled.
}:Luneth says Faucheth's is busy and can't come help. She wanted you to
come.:{
**Wait! Did you say egg?** He sent down his cup and stood. **Get me up
there now!** He ran for the ledge and grasped a neckridge while they
flew up to Luneth's ledge.
"Ninaine, are you alright," he asked as he entered pushing the leather
aside. But the fragrance that met him told him she was far from
alright.
Ninaine looked up from her seated position on the floor, her eyes
shadowed and face pale as she swallowed. Her eyebrows furrowed as she
shakily weaved over the bucket in her lap as she blinked at the person
who had just opened up the hide. "You're not T'lat." She said numbly.
"I wanted T'lat, not you." She swallowed and groaned, hugging the
bucket as she bowed her head over it again. "You're not supposed to be
here." She wretched again, sounding miserable. "How did..." She
reached blindly for the glass of water beside her, found it, and
gingerly sipped to swish her mouth clean.
It finally clicked that N'call was actually in the weyr and she lifted
her head to peer at him. Tears sprung up in her eyes, even as she
tried to blink them back. It seemed like all she did lately was cry,
vomit and sleep. "Go away. You're not supposed to know."
"T'lat wasn't available so Luneth called us instead." He squatted but
didn't try to come too close. He wasn't she what she'd do under the
circumstances. She probably blamed him and well, he couldn't say she
was wrong. Still... "Too late," he said. "I know. Why didn't you tell
me?"
**Why did you do that? Why did you tell him? You know I didn't want
him to know.** The question was plaintive.
}: You were ill. Faucheth's couldn't come. You said he put the egg
there, so he should take care of you. :{ The green reasoned. }: Just
like Haloth is taking care of Onnyth because he put the eggs in her.
:{
She just had to mention that. Ninaine flinched at the thought and
stared down at the disgusting bucket in her lap before she had to look
quickly away. She wiped at her nose and sniffed. "Would you have even
cared if I had?" She didn't look at him. "I barely see you and you're
always with Teseada and the eggs. And you're a bronzerider. You
probably have lots of children around. This is just another one." A
hint of anger sparked in her words and she lifted her head up to stare
blearily at him. "Ever since Haloth won that flight, you haven't cared
about me or even really wanted me. I've just been an after thought."
He'd always heard that pregnant women were difficult but this was
beyond anything he'd ever heard before. He sighed heavily and then
folded his legs and sat on the floor next to her. "I do not have any
children that I am aware of," he said quietly. He didn't really want
to upset her more than she already was. "Yours will be the first." He
smiled at her and smoothed a strand of hair out of her mottled face.
"I'm sorry if you think that because you are always on my mind. You
can confirm that through Luneth if you like." He was certain of the
results of that conversation. Haloth had berated him more than once
for dwelling on the greenrider when he was supposed to be doing
something else.
She looked at him when he touched her. "But...but you're never really
around any more." It wasn't hard to check with Luneth, who checked
with Haloth. Luneth was quite content to relay and confirm what N'call
had said. Her eyes visibly softened. "I thought that you wouldn't
care." She admitted. "That I made you go away and you didn't really
want me because I don't ride a gold."
"That's not it at all," he said. "G'nir has been working my butt off,"
he chuckled. "And you're hiding in your weyr so I never see you when I
have a few minutes. I'm sorry you're not feeling good. Can I get you
anything?" He was beginning to understand why Haloth didn't want to
leave Onnyth's side.
Without thought, Ninaine turned to crawl into N'call's lap and leaned
against him. Just his familiar warmth was a comfort. She had been so
stressed and so busy in her crying fits that she had thought that she
wouldn't get to feel that warmth again. "Just...hold me? Please?"
He made room for her in his lap and murmured to her as his arms
enfolded her. "Of course sweetheart." He held her against him.
Listening to his heartbeat, Ninaine's sick stomach was soothed and within
just a little time, she fell into a far more restful sleep.
