Corowal had invited the Hold's key people to plan for the Turnover
Gather. He had asked Delynn to bring refreshments to his Study, for
the planning might take awhile. Turnover was usually a big event at
Emerald Falls Hold. Three days of celebrating took lot of planning and
work from the hold's staff.
Flanked by two drudges carrying trays, Delynn also held a silver
platter holding various pastries, meat rolls, cheeses and fresh fruit.
There was klah, tea, and juice on the other trays. With a smile and
nod for the Lord Holder, she set about seeing the food and drink
settled before she shooed the kitchen workers away and back to their
duties.
Sarban sauntered in, with some hides under his arm. They'd been
through this before so he was used to it. Of course they had a new
headwoman now so whether or not she would perform was a concern. That
was Lady Felyna's duty to worry over, though, not his.
Felyna had complete trust in their new Headwoman, and was _very_ glad
to have her here this Turnover. So much of the other duties had
fallen on her last turn and then there had been that awful scene with
Erassa and the months of coldness between her and Corowal. All in
all, she was fairly glowing with excitement and hope for this Turn's
celebrations.
She arrived last, having been caught up in some small matter with the
children, but did step in after Sarban. She blew a kiss to her
handsome husband, nodded a friendly hello to Sarban, and offered
Delynn a warm smile before smoothing her simple gown in Emerald Falls'
colors over her hips and sitting down close to Corowal.
She said, by way of greeting, "Ahh, Delynn, I can't wait to give you
all the work for this Turnover!"
"It does make the job easier," Corowal grinned at his wife. "I trust
you two have met?" he asked Sarban and Delynn.
"Aye, we've met," Delynn answered with a smile for each man in turn
before she retrieved two hides she'd tucked onto one of the trays and
took her seat. With a chuckle and a wink Delynn faced Felyna, "And
I'm excited to wade in and get my hands dirty. We'll make certain
it's memorable for all."
There was an understeward in the corner to take notes so Sarban didn't
have to worry about it. "So in turns past, we've always relied on the
harper hall to provide the entertainment. I assume that will be done
again? If so, we'll need to speak to Master Vestian since he's in
charge now. I've got the traders and everyone ready to go and will see
the square setup. Delynn-the headwoman usually handles the food and
lodging issues as well as welcoming important guests. Corowal, did you
have need to setup any special meetings with anyone coming in?"
Corowal nodded. "I'm using the Conclave Chamber for the trials and
appeals and other formal occasions. I also need a smaller meeting room
prepared for a meeting with the minor holders. I like it to be less
formal."
"Mmm we can do that as a lunch and provide food. That will keep them
there longer and make them more amenable with food in their bellies,"
Sarban half mumbled to himself as he wrote a few things down. Becoming
quiet again, he waited to see if the Lady Holder had any special ideas
or needs. Sensitive to her and hoping situations like this where she
had more control and received encouragement would help her confidence,
Sarban watched Felyna and once again hoped there would be another
baby-born healthy this time. Corowal needed her.
Delynn, too was making notes on how rooms were being used and what
would be needed in each. She jotted down possibilities for a luncheon
for the minor holders and gave some brief consideration to the menu,
though that was a detail for later.
"I'd like to host a Ladies Breakfast, maybe the last morning before
everyone goes home. If you put several women in a room, they are
bound to talk." The last she said dryly, and with a laugh. "And
perhaps we can find out how the minor Holders are feeling about the
Turn in general. " She would like to spend more time among the wives
of their holders, and perhaps, their unmarried daughters. She could
find out then who was looking for a husband, and who might need help
with various things that they would not bother their husband or their
Lord in the telling. She was surely not the first one to think of
such a thing. "The women do tend to gather in my solar anyway, but
this will be a bit more formal with invitations and pretty decorations
perhaps." She was just thinking out loud, but wasn't sure if there
was time for something additional in all the other celebrations.
"That's a good idea. Let's check the schedule: at the first evening we
have the fest dinner and harper hall will provide us performances. On
turn Over evening we had the grand ball," Corowal said. He glanced at
Delynn. "That means you have to clear out the tables and chairs and
turn the dining hall to a dance floor. How about Turn's Begin's
morning for your breakfast? Before people start to head home?"
"From my perspective that's easy enough to add," Delynn commented
making some more notes, recognizing it for a very good idea.
Individualized invitations and a special event designed just for them
would put the women in good spirits and help to validate their role.
It was a tremendous way engender trust and gather more information.
Felyna was pleased at the reception to her idea and smiled. "That sounds
perfect, husband. It will be a nice way to send off the families, as
well."
Get her a Headwoman and she immediately started thinking like a Lady again,
imagine that!
"Allright so the basic schedule is set. Now we each need to see to our part
of
the logistics. We'll also need to make sure that Zandan is ready with
adequate
security. Both the Lord and Lady Holder should have a bodyguard nearby at
all
times. With what happened to Lady Benani and Reven I don't think we should
chance anything-even at our own Hold." He also had certain holdless
dragonriders
in mind with violent tendencies though he didn't think that boy would be
stupid
enough to come to Turnover at Emerald Falls anyway.
"There's one more thing...Thread Fall is scheduled to happen a day
before, on 28th. Sarban, send men to check all Thread Fall shelters
along the main roads. I want them to be in order and fully stocked so
our visitor have comfortable place to wait it out. Not everyone comes
with a dragon," Corowal remarked after studying the calendar more
carefully.
The thought of being caught outside the Hold during Threadfall made
Delynn shudder. "I'll see the lists are filled as soon as the men
bring the inventories," she said with a nod. This was obviously something
that needed to take precedence.
They stocked them regularly but he'd make a special exception and put
a few more supplies in each one. Thinking to himself, Sarban wondered if
Turnover would go without a hitch. He sincerely hoped so. **That reminds me.
It is seriously time for a few days' off.**
"Anybody has anything else that needs to be adressed now?" Corowal
asked. "We have two months to prepare and we are probably going to
meet regularily before that," this was said mostly to Delynn, who was
new in this kind of thing.
"I believe I've enough to proceed with right now," Delynn replied with a
smile.
"Good, let's get busy then," Corowal smiled.
