Family dinner

Writers: Paula
Date Posted: 6th May 2015

Characters: Olwinna, Sh'lua, Sh'low, Melwina
Description: Olwinna invites her family for a restday dinner.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 14 of Turn 7

The large, dark blue firelizard flew around young dragonrider crossing the
bowl and chirped demandingly. Sh'low looked up and groaned. "Havoc?" With
delighted, affirmative trill, the flit landed on the young bluerider's
shoulder and held out his front leg until the boy took off the message and
read it. "Family dinner, tonight at 18th candlemark. Love: Mom." Sh'low
groaned again. There went his plans for a hot date with hot greenrider. But
there was no saying no to one's mother, especially if she was like his.
"I'll be there," Sh'low told the flit and scratched him.

Sh'lua was holding a bouquet of flowers when he knocked the doors. Their
thing was long past but she still held a special place in his heart. All
the women who had given him children did. Olwinna came to open the door and
Sh'lua leaned down to kiss her and while he was doing it, he wrapped his
free hand around her bottom. She had such a nice, round rump.

"Sh'lua, always a pleasure to see you," Olwinna sounded little breathless
when Sh'lua let go of her.

"Mom, he squeezed your butt!" A child's outraged voice could be heard from
further inside the weyr.

"She's ten now," Olwinna murmured apologetical explanation. She didn't mind
being squeezed by good looking, big blueriders.

"Hello, Melly, it seems like it's been too long since my last visit,"
Sh'lua grinned impishly at the ten turns old, blond girl who glared at
them.

"You are not -my- dad, just my brother's," she declared loudly.

"Melwina, mind your manners, _your_ father would have never treated an
invited guest like that," Olwinna scolded her with a sharp tone. For a
brief moment she looked sad. E'mel was only one who was missing from this
little family get together. Thread had taken him five Turns ago.

That was when Sh'low came in. "Oh lovely, the family squabbles has already
started?" He grinned. He walked over to ruffle his little sister's hair and
she gave him a quick hug.

Then Olwinna gave him a kiss on cheek which made the seventeen Turns old
squirm uncomfortably. He felt too old for such maternal affections. He
didn't mind the bear hug from his father though. Sh'lua finally got around
giving her the flowers and the family could settle down around the dinner
table. The food was provided by the Weyr's kitchen. Olwinna had many
skills, but cooking wasn't one of them. During the dinner, they caught up
with each others lives. Olwinna had to forbid Melwina feeding the flit from
table few times. "He's large enough already. If you keep feeding him, I
have to rename him to a Barrel, for he'll be too fat to cause havoc."

"But he loves me," Melly said and pressed her cheek against the firelizard.

"Of course he loves you, you're feeding him," Olwinna replied. "He loves
everyone who gives him food."

"Which reminds me why I never got a pet," Sh'lua remarked.

After the dinner, the adults took a glass of wine and Sh'low managed to
wheedle a permission to leave, blaming a previous engagement with a hot
greenrider.

"What else there's to expect when he has us for a parents," Olwinna sighed
helplessly when her son left with a cheery wave of hand.

"You mean he's a flirt who sleeps around?" Sh'lua asked with innocent
expression. "Do we know anybody like that?"

"Smarty pants" Olwinna chuckled and poked him to the side with a finger.
"Are you going to slink off too for some hot greenrider?" she asked.

"I could stay in for a night for a hot healer," Sh'lua suggested.

Olwinna considered it, about a half of a second. "You're welcome to stay."
She lifted her glass. There were worse options than to rekindle an old
flame. At least for the night. Olwinna never been the settling down kind.
