Location: River Bluff Weyr

Hurrying from the gardens, Lanniya glanced at the sun as Anaeryth splashed in the water with her clutchmates. She was going to be late! She had been distracted by the lovely scents of the herbs and the warmth of the soil and had completely lost track of time. Dusting what soil she could off of her dress, but still leaving it smudged, she hurried towards the office that Lenala often worked out of.
She knocked and shifted on her bare feet, not even noticing that her feet were covered in moist soil.
Lenala came to the door. "Lanniya..." she started to greet then
noticed her condition. "What happened? Are you all right?" she asked with alarmed tone. Had she fallen badly?
The younger goldrider blinked at the alarm and looked down. "Oh. No, I'm fine. I was in the gardens."
"You certainly look like you've been rolling around in dirt," Lenala said with mild disdain. "Get yourself cleaned up before we start," she guided her to towards her bath room.
"But it's just dirt..." Lanniya protested but followed to the bathing room. "It's not going to hurt anyone."
"It looks..well, dirty. You're goldrider now, you need to look
presentable," Lenala said. She had very tight view what was proper for a goldrider and what was not.
Lanniya blinked. "But no one is here but us." She went to the basin and began washing her hands, then more as Lenala gestured to her.
"It's a principle of the thing. If you let it slip on your own time, you might let it slip in public too," Lenala replied. "You're not just you now, you're a goldrider and therefore whole Weyr's attention is on you. You're public figure."
Lanniya frowned. "But Anaeryth chose me for who I am, not because I was clean, or dirty. " She finished washing up and ran her hands through her hair to settle it. "I'm always just going to be me."
"Well, yes and no. You're still Lanniya, but you're no longer Lanniya, the trader girl. You're Lanniya, the goldrider, Anaeryth's rider, from now on," Lenala replied and gestured her to take a seat. "You need to learn to act accordingly and I'm here to teach you."
She sat with a sigh. "Act like what, exactly?"
"Act like a lady. Greet people according to their rank and expect people treat you according to your rank," Lenala replied. She took a seat too, smoothing down her hem. If her work didn't require riding leathers, she liked to wear feminine clothes. Light dresses suitable for a climate.
Lanniya tilted her head and curled her feet under her bottom. "I know my manners, Lenala. My grandmother taught me. But I also don't want to be something I'm not; it's like lying to someone." She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "I mean, I'm not formal and high born. I don't want to act like I am. "
"A certain level of formality is expected because you're a goldrider now. That doesn't mean you have to act snob." Lenala insisted and softened her statement with a smile. "Now, let's see first how much you do know. How well do you read knots?"
"I know what ranks are and what knots. I've lived on a caravan. We had to know who was in charge and the weyrlingmasters taught us the knots here."
"Good. You also have to recognize all knot colours for all the Weyrs and major holds. You will be visiting other Weyrs and meeting Lords and Ladies from their territories, not just from River Bluff's territory. So, let's test you. What are Dragonsfall's colours?"
Lanniya answered and took a long breath, steeling herself for another long lesson of etiquette.
