Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 1 of Turn 7

D'kere couldn't say that he was exactly thrilled to be given the task
of instructing a bunch of hormonal teenagers about mating flights. **I
think J'darin planned this on purpose.** He grumbled to himself as he
gathered his things, tucked them beneath his arm, and headed to the
classroom where the Weyrlings would be gathering. While some
Weyrlingmasters might have done all of the lecturing on mating
flights, D'kere had felt it only logical that he should invite an
actual greenrider to discuss what the greens should expect when it was
their time to fly.
**They become as prickly as a thornbush, that's for sure.** D'kere
thought uncharitably, remembering how Talwynn had been before her last
flight.
Ninaine sat beside T'lat, hands folded primly in front of her. Unlike
her friend, she wasn't looking forward to this discussion. It was
unnecessary, in her opinion, to bring them all together to discuss
such an intimate subject.
T'lat leaned toward Ninaine, "Loosen up. They're not going to make us
_do_ it here. Nothing but talk like any other lecture."
Just as the last of the Weyrlings were getting seated the greenrider
that D'kere had invited showed up, strolling through the classroom
with a smile.
"You look so excited for this." Devyn's smokey voice dripped sarcasm
as she approached D'kere.
The Weyrlingmaster's weyrmate had seemed a logical choice to D'kere
and he trust she wouldn't go into details that might embarass the
holdbred Weyrlings, unlike other greeriders he knew.
"You know it." He replied as she took a seat off to the side.
Addressing the Weyrlings, D'kere clapped his hands together to get
their attention, "Alright, you all know the topic of today's lesson-
your first mating flights. I'll address the bronze, brown and
blueriders first, and then Devyn here will speak to the greenriders
about what to expect." He glanced around, "Any questions before we
begin?"
T'lat twisted eyes front when D'kere began to speak and watched Devyn
as she walked in behind him. He wasn't about to speak at this point in
the lecture.
Ninaine eyed T'lat, but didn't relax. This was one of the many lessons
that made her highly uncomfortable, especially since it was done so
openly. Did it have to be in a group setting? She turned as Devyn
walked in and then swung her eyes back up front, shrinking down in her
seat just a bit.
"I didn't think so." D'kere chuckled, answering his own question as if
he found the silence of the class amusing. Leaning back against the
desk at the front of the room, the bronzerider crossed his arms over
his chest and continued. "Alright, fellas who ride male dragons, we'll
start with you. First, what is the easiest way to tell when a female
dragon is getting close to rising?" His eyes scanned the room looking
for someone to answer.
L'ger raised his hand. "She might glow a bit, and her rider might get
proddy."
"L'ger, perfect." D'kere gave a nod of his head, "The dragon will
glow, if you've never seen what it looks like, don't worry, your
dragons will notice it immediately and be eager to inform you of it."
Kenirath was constantly filling him in on the glow of females that he
was 'watching', "As for the proddiness of the greenrider, I'll tread
carefully on that comment," he grinned a little and cut his eyes
sideways at Devyn, who lifted her eyebrows, "but it _is_ common that
riders of greens, and golds even, are much more... _hormonal_ when it
gets closer to their dragons time to rise."
Shifting in her seat, Ninaine began to tune out the conversation in
favor of listening to Luneth. The dragon was eyeing a bronze and
attempting to flirt, but wasn't completely sure of herself; Ninaine
could relate. Listening to her green was far preferable to listening
to this conversation
"Alright, so let's say your dragon actually catches a female. When you
gather your wits about you afterward, what would be the proper way to
respond?" D'kere glanced about, looking for an answer.
T'lat knew the question wasn't for him so he didn't open his mouth
though he perked up when he heard a clearing throat from behind him.
M'let raised his hand and nodded toward D'kere. "You say thank you for
the nice flight," he smirked. "Then you offer to do her again." He and
his buddies broke out laughing.
T'lat just rolled his eyes and looked at Ninaine. "Animals," he said
in a stage whisper that could be heard throughout the room.
It was Devyn who quipped, "And that folks, is how you end up with a
broken nose after your first flight." She speared M'let with her gaze
while D'kere hid a guffaw behind his hand.
As the friends around M'let hooted with laughter and jabbed at him,
D'kere raised his hands, "Alright, alright, settle down." It was true
that riders like M'let either tended to be very popular in the flight
rooms, or extremely _unpopular_.
The laughter startled Ninaine back into attention and she glanced
around before sitting back up. Her nose wrinkled at the jibes around
M'let and she glanced at T'lat with an expression of complete distaste
for the boy.
D'kere pushed away from the front table, "Listen up, greenriders,
Devyn's going to give you the quick run down on what to expect and
everyone else," his eyes swept over the blue, brown and bronze
Weyrlings, "is free to go."
Devyn waited for the the shuffling of feet to fade before she turned
her eyes on the remaining Weyrlings. It was an interesting mix of
males, females, and from what she'd heard J'darin say, weyrbred and
holdbred. "When your green is getting close to her time to rise you
are going to be extremely hormonal... Ladies, it's like your monthly
cycle only twice as bad. Men, now you'll know what it's like." She
grinned a little at the male greenriders.
**Thank Faranth a green dragon did not choose me.** D'kere thought as
he glanced out over the Weyrlings, his eyes stopping on the faces of
the male riders like T'lat.
"Those are all things you know, of course, or have heard about already
in Weyrlinghood." Devyn crossed her arms over her chest, "So are there
questions that you have for me about what to expect?"
Ninaine hesitantly lifted her hand. "What happens if we don't go to
the flight rooms?"
T'lat's eyes rolled toward his friend mentally shaking his head.
Aparently she hadn't believed what he'd told her. He tried to cover
his scrunched face with a hand so she wouldn't see.
L'get snorted, hastily pulling out an handkerchief to make out it was a
sneeze. Did she not realise that the dragons would know where to find her?
The Weyrlingmaster's Second remained quiet where he sat, arms crossed
over his chest as he watched Devyn, waiting for her reply. Even though
this was his first group of Weyrlings, D'kere would wager that at
least one person in every group asked Ninaine's question.
The look Devyn gave Ninaine was sympathetic, "If you don't show up at
the flight rooms the men will show up at your door. When you take part
in a mating flight you join with the mind of your dragon- there is no
seperation mentally- and the same way the male dragons pursue your
green in the air, their riders will pursue you on the ground. It's a
much less tramatic ordeal if you simply go to the flight rooms."
"When you completely join with your dragon you'll find yourself doing
things that you never thought- whether you are a guy or a girl." She
looked between the male and female greenriders. "It'll go much
smoother, and be over much faster, if you just let it happen. The more
you resist, the more tense you are, the worse everything will be."
Ninaine's hand slipped back to her lap and she glanced at T'lat before
giving a soft sigh. So even if she didn't go to the flight room,
they'd find her. Was there no way out? She didn't want to share her
bed with a complete stranger, but it seemed like she'd have no real
choice.
Another hand went up and attention was taken away from Ninaine's
dilemma as they discussed what to do if your partner wanted to "stay"
after the flight and you wanted to leave, and so and so on. When Devyn
had answered all she could, D'kere released the remaining greenriders
with a wave of his hand.
When they had all left, D'kere stood, a cocky little grin on his face,
"Not so easy was it?"
Devyn raised an eyebrow at the Weyrlingmaster's Second, "I think I
handled it better than you. I thought you might swallow your tongue
when one of them asked about orgasms."
Both of D'kere's hands flew up as if to ward off the thought of his
students and the horrible "o" word, "The Weyrlings like... my weird
step-children to me, I cannot think of them that way."
"Ha!" Devyn barked, "You might want to start thinking of them that
way. Kenirath could fly one of their greens someday."
"Faranth forbid." D'kere gasped, putting a hand over his heart as he
and Devyn walked left the room.
