Lanniya

Genna had hesitated for a long time, remembering very well the endless
line of congratulators that had overwhelmed her so when she had
impressed herself. But in the end, curiosity won her over and she
found herself in the line waiting to have a brief moment to speak to
Lanniya, the new goldrider of River Bluff Weyr. For some reason she
felt a connection, having experienced what the other girl just had not
all that long ago. She was eager to know if Lanniya felt it too. One
day, they may in fact have to deal with each other professionally and
it would be nice if they could get off a good start.

Lanniya was unused to the attention, but her smile never faltered, nor
did the spark leave her eyes. She was still floating on the sensation
of Impression even as she accepted congratulations. As Genna
approached, Lanniya's eyes found her knots and then swung back up to
her face. "Hi! I guess you're new too, huh?"

"Yes, yes, I am," Genna smiled, instantly relaxing at the cheerful
greeting and extending her hand. "I'm Genna, weyrling to gold Lissath
at Dragonsfall Weyr. Congratulations, Lanniya, she is a beautiful
young lady. It was an honour to see her hatch."

"It's nice to meet you too, Genna. " She took her hand. "Thank you. I
never thought Anaeryth would choose me, but..." Lanniya laughed and
took a breath. "...she did. Was it like that for you too?" She glanced
around, and noted several eyes watching both of them. "Like this?"

"Very much like this," Genna nodded instantly. "I'm afraid you're in
for a long night, though you probably already realized as much.
Everyone will want to talk to you," she paused for a moment, smiling
apologetically as she continued. "I considered not adding to that, but
somehow I couldn't resist."

"Oh, I don't mind talking to you. You know what this is all about."
Lanniya waved at the crowd. "I mean, I know gold's are important, but
really...she's just a baby. It's not like I'm going to be Weyrwoman
tomorrow or anything."

"That's true. But she'll grow up before you realize just how fast
she's doing it. Time flies with a baby dragon on your hands, be
prepared for that," Genna laughed.

"I'll have to be." Lanniya sighed. "Is there any other pointers you
can give me? It's one thing to be able to hear other dragons, but
another to have one of my own and help her grow."

"Just trust in your teachers, if they are anything like the
Weyrlingstaff at Dragonsfall, you are in good hands," Genna gave the
girl an encouraging smile. "You're allowed to make mistakes and they
will help you fix them."

Lanniya nodded. "That's what I was told when I was a candidate." She
tilted her head to look at the other girl. "What helped you the most?"

"Patience and understanding," Genna laughed. "I can be a bit of a
perfectionist when it comes to Lissath and everything to do with my
new rank. I expect myself to be perfect and I think everyone else
expects that too. People having patience with and understanding for my
mistakes show me that's not true."

"I think I can manage that." Lanniya nodded. "I guess having a little
hatchling is like being around and taking care of a baby, right?"

"Oh yes," Genna laughed. "And to make it worse, this baby has full
access to your head and everything in it!"

Lanniya laughed along with Genna. "Poor thing! My grandfather teases
me all the time that there's not much in there but air."

"I am fairly sure that is far from the truth," Genna chuckled. "Well,
I won't keep up the line much more. If you ever need any more advice
from a fellow junior, don't hesitate to send me a message. I'm much
more mobile now that I'm betweening and I would love another chat when
you have the time." Not that Lanniya would be having any time for the
foreseeable future, but it felt good to offer in advance. Genna liked
the girl and they were likely to meet again often in the future.

"I would like that. I really would. It'll be nice to be able to talk
to someone close to how old I am about these things. You'll probably
hear from me quite a bit!" Lanniya offered a wide smile.

"That would be awesome," Genna smiled. "Talk to you soon, then!" And
with that she took her leave, making room for all the other
congratulators.
