Ilyssia

Ilyssia

"Sir, may I speak with you about something?" Ilyssia was far more
hesitant than normal, the confidence that she generally demonstrated
in class markedly absent. She honestly wasn't sure if this were
something she should bring up or not, but if anything were to happen
this sevenday with the weyrlings taking their first flights, well,
she'd feel awful.

"Of course you can. That's why I am here, you can talk with me about
anything. If you want it to be private, we can go to my office and
lock the door," E'naer replied with an encouraging smile.

"Thank you, sir. I _would_ appreciate some privacy." Once they were
safely in E'naer's office, she turned to the tall Weyrlingmaster Third
with brow furrowed. "The problem is, I don't really know if it's my
place or if I _should_ say anything. So, um, well hypothetically, if
there were a weyrling who was desperately afraid of heights and tried
really hard to keep that hidden from everyone, but had started having
nightmares as first flights drew near, um, well, would it be right to
tell someone? Or would that be sticking your nose into someone else's
business?"

"It would be the right thing to do, because we can help people with
problems like that. That fear can be defeated. People who are so
afraid of heights that they can't overcome their fear don't Impress, as
a general rule. But we can't help if we don't know there's problem,"
E'naer replied. He sat behind his desk and gestured her to sit down
too. "Hypothetically, who are we speaking of?" he smiled.

"Well, I suggested she come to you herself, but to be honest we
haven't always been on the best of terms. She insists it's no big
deal and I don't know maybe it isn't but she screams out at night
during her sleep. Even if we haven't always seen eye to eye, I'd feel
terrible if something happened with her. It's Nerate." Though the
girl had been quite difficult, with her rather extreme Holder values,
Ilyssia didn't feel good about "snitching," so to speak.

"I'll keep an eye on her. We can deal this a way that you'll part will
be left out," E'naer promised. All he had to do was visit the weyrling
barracks at the night time...or ask one of the female members of the
staff to do it. Then, if they witnessed her nightmares, they could
take her in for a talk.

"Thanks. I mean maybe it really isn't too big a deal. I've been
excited about finally getting to fly on Gwynnyth, but I'm a little
nervous too. Maybe she's just a bit more nervous than excited right
now."

"That may be the cause. Talking about it with someone usually helps,"
E'naer said. He regarded. While D'kere had dealt with the problem with
rumours, that didn't mean E'naer didn't know about it. "How are _you_
holding out? Any new rumours about pregnancy or weyrmatings?"

"To be honest, it _was_ bothering me more than it should for a bit. I
mean, I _know_ words are only words and _I_ control what get's into my
head...well, outside of Gwynnyth of course," she added with a chuckle.
"But on some days it did bother me more than it should have and quite
frankly I probably got as snappish as a canine in heat. Seems the
gossips have found better fodder, though. No new rumors. I have to
say, I'm really looking forward to getting our own weyr, though. I do
like being around people, but barracks life is _highly_ overrated,"
she quipped, giving E'naer a cheeky grin.

"Words may be just words but they can still cut deep. Yes, the
barracks can be...crowded," E'naer answered and smiled at her
cheekiness. This girl would go far.

"My foster mother used to say that even the longest jump /between/ is
bearable if you count your breaths. Soon Gwynnyth and I will have our
own weyr and I doubt I'll even remember the things that were
irritating."

"True. And our memories tend to forget the small annoyances and
remember the good moments," E'naer replied.

"Like Impression," Ilyssia nodded. "And I'm hoping my upcoming flight
with Gwynnyth will be one of those memories as well," her excitement
was evident in her voice. She knew it was to be this sevenday, but
she didn't know which day the Weyrlingstaff had set aside for the big
milestone.

"That will certainly be a memorable event, an important milestone in
your training," E'naer agreed.

"Well, thanks for listening, sir," she said with a smile, as she rose
from her seat.

"Anytime. My door is always open for you if you want to talk," E'naer
said and rose to open her the door. He enjoyed these talks with
Weyrlings, when there wasn't any serious issue involved. They gave him
a chance to really learn to know them.
