Something was bothering Rhosyn, that much Lenala was sure of. But only Faranth knew what it was. There were times when she could almost reach it...only for Rhosyn to withdraw again. Lenala had been slowly starting to think of Rhosyn as a friend, not just as a fellow goldrider or her Wingleader. Truth was that she didn't have that many female friends...and her friendships with men always led to bed. Wearing a mask of cheeriness to hide the concern she felt, Lenala peered into Rhosyn's weyr. "Hi Rhosyn. There's still some sparkling wine left from the Hatching. Want some?"
Sitting in her chair, Rhosyn was messing with Records. There were weyrling updates and other things that always needed to be put in. She always wondered why it was the Weyrwoman's duty and not the Weyr's harper, but she didn't argue with Tradition. When she heard Lenala, she looked up and put down the stylus. "Sure." Stretching out her muscles from the sitting, she looked like a feline for a moment. Then she yawned and wiped her face.
Lenala walked in, carrying a bottle and two glasses. The bottle was chilled, beads of moisture glistering on its surface. She sat down and placed them on the table. "You have a bottle opener, yes?"
Clearing the Records into a bin they would be stored in, Rhosyn nodded. "Ah..over there in the sideboard." The piece of furniture held the plates, glasses, and pitchers she used when holding small meetings in her situation area rather than the full council room where the Wingleaders met. And they were handy to have anyway when one was digging things out of the nice baskets the Headwoman sent when one was alone in their weyr at night cursing men to do foul things when one didn't think anyone was listening.
Lenala got back up and rummaged through the sideboard until she found the corkscrew. She used it to open the bottle. It made a satisfying pop and she filled the glasses.
Rhosyn reached for hers and took a sip. "Anything off happen today?" It was usual for the two of them to check in. Usually it happened over mealtimes. The wine was good and Rhosyn was grateful for it. She was tired and was showing it. It would be time for a nap soon, most likely.
"Uetia lost it again. She yelled at some poor weyrling who fumbled with firestone sacks. We need to keep her grounded," Lenala said with a sad shake of her head. "Uetia's usually so good and patient with the weyrlings."
"She has both pregnancy hormones and that to deal with. I think we need to order her to see Reeva." Rhosyn felt for her-she really did. She had been pregnant and alone. And it had been her first too. Maybe she should have a talk with Uetia too. Pondering that idea, she realized Lenala had recognized a problem and made a decision on her own. It had been a good one too. She kept that observation to herself, but she smiled.
"Yes, I know why she's like that. Which is why she's not in condition to fly Fall," Lenala did feel sorry for the young greenrider.
"Exactly," her Weyrwoman agreed, proud that Lenala was even able to justify her decision and make a valid point. "I think you should tell her."
"Great, then she'll yell at me," Lenala was slightly intimidated by Uetia. She was a big and strong woman.
"Why would she do that? She wouldn't yell at me and you are my second-in-command. So if she yells at you then she's yelling at me." Rhosyn saw it perfectly in her mind and she needed Lenala to see it. She was still having confidence problems.
"I don't know," Lenala sighed and sipped her wine.
"Besides, as I recall you have goldrider knots which means she can't yell at you and if she did, you have a very big dragon who can fix it. Problem solved." Rhosyn sighed and put down her glass. "Lenala, you came in here and explained the situation, suggested a course of action, and made a decision. That's great. You did it without even thinking. Now, you need to not be afraid of the follow through." Watching the other rider, she hoped maybe that hit home finally even though she had said the same thing many times.
"Yes, of course," Lenala murmured, squirming a little. She wasn't used to being complimented either and didn't know how to take it. It made her uncomfortable.
"Have you met any of the senior weyrlings?" They would be Blooding soon which meant graduation was coming. Rhosyn was thinking about adding a constant or two to her Wing since many of her riders would be recuperated soon.
"Not yet. I've observed some of their drills, however," she replied.
"Any of them strike you?" She knew for certain she didn't want Eirlira in her Wing for various reasons. Besides, she wondered if maybe a fighting wing would straighten the girl out.
"There's this blue who might be what we're looking for," Lenala replied with uncertain tone.
"Oh? Tell me about him." Rhosyn finished off the glass and poured herself more. **Keep talking. Waste some time. And show me you know what you're talking about. Come on Lenala-you're ready.**
Lenala poured herself more wine and went to describe the bluerider and why she thought he would fit into their wing. Rhosyn was successfully distracting her from the reason why she had come in first place.
