Ny'n rolled his neck to relax his tense muscles as he entered the bathing chamber. A long soak was going to feel very good. Although one could always expect company in the bathing chambers, he was surprised to hear a child's laughter. When he entered, he saw that a young man with curly brown hair was accompanied by a small child. He couldn't repress a smile when he saw them. The little boy seemed to be enjoying the baths to the fullest. Ny'n recognized the rider from the Cyclone Wing but couldn't recall his name. He stepped into the pool with a smile and nod. "Ny'n, Damarith's rider." "Hello. I am Z'al Nyinth's rider, and this little guy is Zamley my son."
Z'al smiled as the boy splashed around.
Ny'n smiled, "Fetching lad you have there," he commented letting himself relax into the water with a sigh. "Ah this feels good."
"Thank you." Z'al smiled. "This water is enough to make you relax into sleep if you aren't careful."
"Well it's a bit early for sleep, but I am not sure that would be so bad. How are things in the Cyclone Wing?"
"Busy." He said simply. "It's hard with all that has been happening. We train more in hopes of not making the same mistakes again."
Ny'n nodded grimly, "Aye that we all do." He watched the small boy play in the water, and marveled at the innocence. It occurred to him that if circumstances had been different, he might have fathered several children by now. Somehow he had never once thought of that. "I'm just glad I had this guy to cheer me on when I was injured in the thread fall incident." He splashed at his boy.
"You're lucky," Ny'n said with a smile.
"I lost a few friends to that whole mess. I also had a few good friends hurt in it too. Some of which are still healing from it." He shook his head. "Yes, I think we all lost friends," Ny'n added sadly. "So many were wounded, too." He paused not wishing to bring the young father down in his precious time with his son. "But we will learn and the weyr will grow again. Through the turns, Dragonriders have overcome every obstacle and hardship put before them. When it comes young Zamley's turn to stand on the sands I'm sure that we will have refined our fighting techniques so that scarcly a single rider or dragon is injured." "I hope so. I figure he'll be the finest rider around." He smiled as he kissed the top of his sons head.
"Is he your only one?" Ny'n asked. The other rider looked young, but then one could never tell. "Yes. His mother was a childhood love. We'd only been together once before she was married off. It was before I came to the weyr. One day I went home for a brother's birthingday and there he was. She had left him with my parents and disappeared. Currently nobody knows where she has gone. Her husband caused a few problems over it but he has quieted for the moment."
He sighed.
"Well, it is good that you have him here. Fortunately the weyr is blessed with many good foster mothers."
"Yes, the foster mother he is with is very good for him. She is also watching after my younger sisters. They both decided they like it here better and begged my parents to let them stay on here. They figured it would be alright." He smiled.
Ny'n grinned and shook his head. He liked the young rider who was obviously more willing to accept responsibilities than many who were turns his senior. "That was very understanding of your parents. Not all are so open-minded. Many worry about bringing up girls in the weyr. How old are your sisters?" "Ada is twelve and Leeda is nine. They're pretty good girls. Ada takes after dad and Leeda takes after Mom. I've got eight brothers and sisters.
My sister Kiada impressed when I did. My parents figure they have enough of their kids on their boat that giving a few to the weyr is alright." He chuckled.
"Well, with such a large family, I can see why they would not mind."
"My parents are proud to have dragonriders in the family. To them it is one of the highest honors. I hope my sisters do get the chance to stand. If not, perhaps they will settle down here and produce another fine generation of riders." He smiled at the thought. Leeda would be happy to, but Ada wanted bigger and better things. "If more holders and crafters felt like your parents, the weyrleaders' jobs would be much simpler, and perhaps we would never again have to see a dragonet perish on the sands," the older rider observed. "I'll be glad never to see one." He shook his head.
Ny'n reached for the sweetsand. "I had better get washed up, I'm meeting someone later." "I'd best get this one back." He smiled as he got out with his son.
