N'call
Teseada

Teseada

He was eating dinner in the dining hall when the urgent summons came
from Haloth. }:The eggs! They come!:{

He had now doubt Onnyth had already told Tes so he didn't even turn in
the direction of her office or weyr to try and inform her. Instead he
stood and went to the serving station. He lifted his chin at one of
the drudges, "I need a fresh pot of klah, some mugs and a try of meat
and bubblie pies brought to the door of the hatching ground in about a
quarter candle mark.

The drudges face broke into a smile, "Eggs coming sir?"

"They are," he grinned back. "and I need to run now." He turned and
trotted out of the cavern and headed toward the hatching grounds.
Haloth was already there crooning to his golden mate and guarding the
entrance to keep any onlookers away from her.

"You can let him in!" Teseada called out to Onnyth, aware that N'call was
more than likely on the way.

N'call made a very deep bow to Onnyth when Haloth let him through into
the cavern. "Thank you mighty Onnyth," he said with his very best
dragon manners. He then walked slowly toward Teseada so as not to give
her any reason to toss him out.

"See, one already!" Teseada said with a smile as she moved over slightly on
her seat to make room for the bronzerider. "She'll save the rest for us two
though."

"Good," he smiled and slid in next to her. "I told the kitchen to send
up a fresh pot of klah and some pies. We'll probably be here awhile. I
could send for some blankets and pillows as well if you like."

"Now that is good thinking," she said with a chuckle. "If we're here a
while we may need the padding."

"And a nap," he grinned. "If' she'll let us." There was a knock at the
door and he got up to answer it. In those few moments he arranged for
furs to be brought in later. "Here we go," he said as he brought the
tray to her.

"Look!" she clutched his arm as he held the tray. "There's a second egg."

"Oh, that one is a good sized one too," he said and poured himself a
cup of klah.

"She's got a lot to live up to after last time."

He smiled at her, "They both do. But they've done what Genith never
did and you should be very proud of that."

"We are," she said reaching for a pastry.

"Good," he grinned and held up the pot, "Want some?" He looked over at
the queen, "Looks like a couple more."

"At least," the pastry was set back down as the goldrider commenced a quick
count. Half a dozen now, and that one over to the left is a good size, the
one with the blueish streak on it, I bet that's there to fool us and there
could be a brown inside it."

N'call laughed and picked up one of the long fried tuber sticks the
cook had made for them. He bit into one and his eyebrows lifted. "Oh
these are good. How long do you think it's going to take?"

"She could have us here until tomorrow morning if she wants to," Teseada
said as she watched Onnyth slowly clear out another hollow for another egg.
"If she wants to take a nap in the middle of the process she will."

As the time got longer they got refills on the klah but N'call began
to feel a little of the chill so he pulled a big fur and wrapped it
around the two of them where they sat to watch. The sands were hot
where Onnyth was laying her eggs but the cavern itself was huge and
the cold had begun to seep in. "Comfy," he smiled.

"Yes," she said leaning into him. "And I think that makes eighteen now."

"Wow, that's a pretty good pace," he said, "and she looks like she
still has plenty to go."

"She'll tell us when she's done."

"I'm sure," he smiled. "it's getting late," he said. "Do you think
she'll let us nap?"

"I think so," Teseada said after a moment or two. "She says she needs a
break herself, but that there are still eggs to come."

"Oh good," he said. He could feel his eyelids drooping and Haloth was
curled up near the entrance still with one eye open and his body
between anyone and the laboring queen. He stood and made a nest of the
furs in front of the benches then laid down on his side intending to
spoon with Teseada facing Onnyth. He held out an arm in invitation.
"Come on," he smiled.

"So, so tempting," said Teseada even as she settled herself next to the
bronzerider. She reached for one of the furs to pull over them. There was
something that appealed about making a comfy, warm hollow, just like Onnyth
made for each of her eggs. And it was comfortable, echoes of the flight that
led to this danced through her thoughts. "Comfy?"

"Yes," he smiled into her hair. Then fell into a light doze with one
arm over her waist and the other under the pillow.

Onnyth however wasn't into letting them doze for too long. Her delicate,
well delicate for a gold, bellow was enough to make Teseada stir as she
announced the arrival of another egg.

}:You should see,:{ she told her rider. }:You and Haloth's. Look what we
have done!:{

That led to her rider nudging N'call. "She wants us to watch now."

"Oh sure," he said waking up and rubbing his eyes to get them open.
He'd been having a nice cozy dream and regretted losing it yet, this
was very important too. "Does she need anything?" Haloth's head was
up as well watching the queen intently.

"Our attention and praise," came the reply even as she watched the gold
create another hollow. "I think she's ready to finish up and needs an
audience."

"Of course," he said sleepily and then stood reaching a hand down to
help Teseada to her feet.

She to the hand that was offered to her, getting to her feet even as she
began to count. "Is that thirty eggs now?"

"Thirty one?" he said counting himself. "There's one that's kind of
hiding behind that bigger one." He pointed to the one he was taking
about.

"You're right." Teseada quickly counted again, "that one she's just laid is
thirty two."

Onnyth meanwhile settled for one last moment of them admiring her
performance, and a thirty third egg appeared.

}:These are my eggs,:{ Onnyth said, }:They will be worth the wait.:{
