"Bronzerider, you are blocking my sun with your nicely rounded arse.
Could you please move it a bit to the left hm?" Rhosyn chuckled to
herself as she shifted on the blanket. She was sitting on it, reading
the candidate records.
J'ren turned and arched an eyebrow. He had realized there was a body
there but had been so lost in thought that he hadn't realized _who_ that
body belonged to. He inclined his head toward the Weyrwoman, then
stepped to the side. "My apologies, Rhosyn." At least she seemed in a
better mood - and she _had_ given him a compliment, a fact that spurred
a flicker of a smile to tickle the corners of his lips. "Nicely rounded, eh?
Can I quote you on that?"
"Ah sure. Course I've held it in my hand the once so if it hasn't changed, my
statement is more than apt." She was unapologetic about that reference,
looking down again at her hides. That had been a long time ago though.
She was a different person now, though she was fighting to get back to that
woman.
J'ren twisted around in an effort to get a better look at his backside.
"You seem to be spending a lot of time in those hides. Maybe you should
look at backsides more often, just for a change of pace."
"Eh well this is all I can do until the eggs hatch." That rankled, but Rhosyn
understood it was part of being a goldrider, after all. "And besides, I
plan to do more of the other then too." N'vanik had made himself perfectly
clear, so why not?
"Feel free to look at my backside any time." Why couldn't Rhosyn be
like that more often? She was almost downright cheerful, when she
wasn't busy acting like a spoiled brat. "I have to admit, I've peeked
at yours from time to time."
Shrugging, she didn't react much to the statement but she did look up from
her hides, giving him more of her attention. "When it's in plain view, I'd assume
it would be pretty hard not to, though by the looks of things there are
quite a few women in this Weyr that have better specimens than I. One of the
greenriders in your Wing, for one."
"Which one?" J'ren honestly didn't have a face pop into his head in
particular - not a greenrider anyway, and he couldn't help but be
curious about whom the Weyrwoman spoke.
"Hmm the name starts with an M and the rest is for you to figure out."
Smiling to herself, she was enjoying the teasing banter. It had been a long
time for certain. Maybe things were finally getting back to normal and she
felt better about it.
J'ren emitted a chuckle and shook his head. "Every woman is beautiful
in her own way - don't sell yourself short." He paused, as if to
contemplate something and when he spoke again, it was with a hint of
hesitation. "So are you feeling better about things now?"
"About which things?" For just a moment she hesitated. **Does he know?
Who told him? Lenala?** Trying to keep calm, she kept that smile on her
face though inside she was trembling.
"About the new Weyr." J'ren was no dragon and could not fathom the
thoughts of the woman before him. "You seemed rather concerned about
how people would react." That was putting it mildly.
"No one left so it's a moot point now." She shrugged and looked down. "We're
not at full strength yet. Of course we're not as bad off as other Weyrs but..we
couldn't afford to lose people..especially to a woman who deserted her own
Weyr and up and took their eggs with her." Her anger showed again and it was
clear that was what Rhosyn was bothered about. "Traelyn..Janani..Hygalia..I don't
understand it."
He supposed he could see her point, partially, but if people left, he
wouldn't be surprised to find it was partially due to her. Not that
some of River Bluff's earlier Weyrwomen had been that much better -
Zharesti in particular. "I'm sure they have their reasons - it's not
fair to judge them when we don't have the entire story, especially not
straight from them."
"As a rider..there's no understanding for shirking your duty, especially
your duty to your Weyr. And I know more about what happened to some of them
than you do." That was goldrider business though. Rhosyn's mouth set in
a line before easing. "Let's just say I have my reasons for being angry at my
own kind and I more than anyone else have the right to judge them since
I never did what they did."
"I don't think you have a right to judge anyone without knowing the full
story." Now she was being unreasonable again and this was the Rhosyn he
didn't care for - the one so overly sensitive. Slowly, carefully and as
respectfully as possible, he continued with his own assessment. "You
may know the story about some of it, but not all of it. I'm sure people
have viable reasons for the choices they made and I don't think it's
right to judge them without getting that full story."
"Just because they have reasons doesn't mean they made the right decision.
And my decision is made. Just as you seem to think I should agree with you,
I could easily say you should agree with me." He could argue his point all day
long but that didn't mean she was going to agree with it. And the beauty
of it was-he had to accept that because he had no authority over her.
J'ren arched an eyebrow at the Weyrwoman and shook his head. She just
didn't get it. "I never said that you _had_ to agree with anyone. I'm
merely stating you shouldn't automatically judge people when you don't
know the whole story. You automatically assume they're shirking duty or
not doing what's right, but you only see one side of the issue. Until
then, I don't think you can truly and fairly judge whether or not a
decision was right or wrong."
"In an Interval, you might be right. In a Pass, however, duty to your Weyr
and Pern comes first." She had learned her Duty Song just like anyone and
Rhosyn didn't like the idea of someone questioning Tradition. "Either way
I have as much right to my judging as you do to yours. Because, I believe,
you are judging me right this moment." Her eyes flashed and it was clear
that Rhosyn wasn't going to let it go on for too much longer if he insisted
upon it.
"I'm judging your action in judging others as unfair." J'ren wasn't
going to let her try to make it into something it wasn't. "And perhaps
they're doing what they feel is best for Pern. Perhaps they feel that
they can be utilized better at a different Weyr. A new Weyr means that
there are people who need dragonriders to protect them - duty to Pern
includes duty to those people. If no one transferred, then there would
be no one to fly Thread in that area, and they would suffer. Pern would
suffer."
"You are making so many assumptions. Part of being a leader, J'ren, is making
judgment calls. Sometimes you have to realize that not everyone is going to do
what they should. You have to accept reality instead of always giving the benefit
of the doubt. And yes, you have to judge the situation." Rhosyn knew he would
never see the point but luckily he didn't need to in this case since it was already done.
"Yes if no one transferred there would be no one to fly Thread at that Weyr. Another
Weyr would have to fly the territory just as they had done before opening this new
place up. And just because there were people needed to transfer didn't mean
that another Weyr's egg heavy senior gold had to up and leave her Weyr that
needed her. A junior gold would have been proper. Senior golds do not leave.
We stay till we die or we can't fly any longer. Everyone knows that."
And from the sound of her voice she intended to do just that. Getting up, she gathered
her things and headed off in the direction of her weyr-not wanting to sit outside any longer.
J'ren shook his head. Part of him agreed with her, but he just couldn't
completely condemn the woman until he knew all the facts - something he
doubted even Rhosyn had. She was so quick to judge and take everything
personally. Although she was a good leader in some respects, J'ren
honestly thought she was detrimental in others. With a sigh, he tried
to shrug the conversation off and moved off in the direction of his own quarters.
