Excitement flared in Lanniya as the humming grew louder, echoing
through the Hatching Cavern. She shifted from foot to foot, not only
because of the heat but because it was hard for her to hold still. She
wanted to watch everything all at once. Her gaze turned to the Stands,
eyes searching.
There they were. Her grandparents sat near Solieira, holding hands with
each other as they watched. There was nervous hope on their faces as
they looked down at her and she blew them a quick kiss. Her
grandfather playfully caught it and then gestured back to the eggs.
She grinned and turned back, taking a deep breath. He was right; she
should be paying attention.
She sucked in a breath as eggs began cracking open. The shrill voices
of the hatchlings were loud in her ears; they'd not learned to quiet
their voices or make them private yet and it was difficult to tune
them out. She shook her head and winced, tugging at her ear in
discomfort, brow furrowed as she tried to push them into the
background.
A high pitched feminine voice calling a familiar name caught her
attention. Was it for her? She turned, but no…she was calling for
Magea. Good for her! Baraith was such a nice name too, but seemed to
be a bit stubborn. And then Aldryn? With a green? Well…that explained
a lot. She wondered how he felt about it. Hopefully he was happy
because Nalarith was a pretty little thing. Was there a green for
her? Her eyes searched hopefully.
The jostling caught her up and she turned again as the gold egg bucked
and toppled over. About to rush forward with the other girls, she
caught herself and held back as one girl was knocked down. Lanniya
watched as a delicate head thrust through the shell, forced her way
out and spread thin little wings with a shrill hiss. She was
absolutely the most beautiful thing that Lanniya had ever seen and she
could only stare as some of the girls pushed forward only to be driven
back by angry red eyes.
Those eyes slid over the girls around her, and then finally settled on
her. The myriad of voices from the other hatchlings abruptly faded as
a silvery triumphant cry slammed into her brain. }: There you are! I
am Anaeryth and you are Mine! :{ The voice was strong, clearer than
she had ever heard and with a stunned realization, Lanniya knew that
the voice was only for her.
A cry of joy erupted from her as she stumbled forward to greet her new
lifemate, Impression rooting in her and filling a void she never knew
existed. She laid her hands on either side of Anaeryth's face,
reveling in the resulting croon from the gold. She dimly heard dual
cheers from her family in the Stands; she only had eyes for Anaeryth,
her Anaeryth.
}: Yes, yours. :{ Anaeryth was surprisingly gentle as she pressed her
head against Lanniya's side. }: But I am hungry and these people are
in my way. I need food now. :{ As gentle and soft as her voice now
was, there was an edge of steel to it.
Lanniya led the gold out of the Hatching Cavern, her face glowing. It
had happened. Her dream had come true.
