The Southern Star was docked and would be in port at the Hall for at least a
few sevendays before heading out again. Relik was thinking it high time he speak
to Herlis about Kaphrad's invention to see if the man might be interesting in testing the
vessel when it was ready. It would be a great opportunity for anyone, but
Relik wanted an experienced hand behind the wheel that he trusted. The hallmaster
made his way towards the classroom where he knew the Captain was speaking with some of the
journeymen.
Herlis had just dismissed the Journeymen when he saw the Hallmaster at the
classroom door. He moved to meet him at the door as he said his goodbyes to
the last two leaving.
When they were all gone, Relik spoke though not very loudly. "I've come to
ask your opinion about something." By the look in his
eyes it was clear the old man was up to something.
"Ask ahead," Herlis said easily, Relik's expression intriguing him greatly.
"Kaphrad and I have been working on a new invention of his. Got some help
from the smiths, mind, but it was his idea. Anyway, we're going to build a
ship that can be under its own power. Working on it, but when it's done, I
need someone for the maiden." His eyes watched Herlis carefully for a reaction
and hoped it might be favourable.
"Under its own power?" Herlis asked curiously. "In what way?"
"There's to be an engine. Sort of like the riverboats but different. We have
coal for it." Relik knew that he had been very skeptical
at first as well but now that he had seen the thing, he was beginning to be
excited.
"Coal?" Herlis brow furrowed in thought. "And you were thinking of me to
take her out?"
"Aye. Kaphrad will go with you since he'll need to take measurements and
temperatures and all that to see how it runs. I'll observe from the shore to
see her depth. Course the maiden won't be very far. We'll do several short
trips then take her out on a long haul." He wanted to make absolutely sure
the thing wasn't dangerous before he would risk his people like that.
"I see," Herlis said, thinking. "You would need my full crew, I take? I'd
need to see the engine or some prototype or something before
I can decide, but I am intrigued."
"It's a full size vessel yes so full crew plus the smiths to run the engine
and Kaphrad at least. You can go by the shipyard and I'm sure
he'll be glad to show you what he has. Been working hard." And that was as
it should be.
"That sounds like a plan," Herlis nodded seriously. "I'll have a chat with
Kaphrad and talk to my crew and let you know what I've decided as soon as
possible."
