Ilyssia

Ilyssia

E'naer looked over the little blue and fought hard not laugh out. The
poor blue was literally dripping oil. "Too much oil," he told the blue's
young rider. "Take a rag and wipe off the excess, will you? The
Headwoman won't like oily smears on the floors," he instructed gently.
He so loved working with the Weyrlings, especially this stage, when
they were still figuring out which end of the dragonet was which one.
Still wearing the amused smile, he turned to check the next pair.
"Hello, Illyssia, was it? How are you two doing?"

"Yes, it's Ilyssia, sir," the weyrling answered, correcting the
pronunciation of her name without overtly pointing out the error.
"And I think we're doing well," she replied reaching out a hand to
fondly caress the freshly oiled green hide, in awe at its softness.
"It's amazing to feel what she's feeling, but definitely takes some
getting used to. I'm a bit worried about being behind. I was only a
candidate for two sevendays. There's loads of stuff for me to learn
so that I can do right by Gwynnyth here."

The dragonet leaned into her lifemate. }:You do everything just
right:{ Gwynnyth assured the girl sleepily. Having been fed, bathed,
and oiled, she was feeling very content, though tired.

"Nice to hear that Ilyssia," E'naer said, correcting his
pronunciation. With over thirty new names to memorize, you didn't get
them all right at beginning. "And don't worry about being in behind.
You're not only one in that situation. There are some who arrived just
a _day_ before the Hatching. We deal with it during the lessons," he
bent to give Gwynnyth a scratch. "You're a beautiful, little one." At
the same time, he gave her a quick look over with the dragonhealer's
trained eye.

}: Not as beautiful as I am, :{ Eillispeth huffed.

**Get jealous?** E'naer teased her.

}:I like this one:{ Gwynnyth told Ilyssia, looking up almost
coquettishly at the man, delighted by the compliment.

**Of course you do, dearheart. E'naer is the Weyrlingmaster Third. He's
one that will teach me all I need to know to take care of you.**

"That's good to know, sir, but I plan to catch up right quick.
Everything looks good right now doesn't it?" She'd seen him look the
dragonet over and had followed his gaze, anxious lest there be any
concerns with her lifemate. She closely examined the baby dragon,
admiring the rich and vibrant shade of dark spring green that gleamed
beautifully after being oiled. Gwynnyth was moderately sized at
hatching and not as delicate as some greens, but Ilyssia thought her
dragonet's lines were quite graceful, though she supposed she was
biased.

"Yes, she looks perfectly fine. Lovely colour, reminds me of
Eillispeth's, only bit darker," E'naer replied.
"Have you a picture of her personality yet?" he asked. Some dragonets
had distinct personality from the moment they broke out off egg, while
others were harder to figure out.

"Well, she definitely goes after what she wants. I'd say she's
somewhat bold and maybe impetuous, though perhaps that's just her age
and not her personality," Ilyssia's voice was full of tenderness as
she discussed the little green. "She's very curious, too, but again I
suppose that could be because she's so young."

"Yes, it could be, her personality gets more refined when she matures.
But certain traits remain same. Like my Eillispeth's vanity," E'naer
replied with a grin.

Ilyssia smiled, then her brow furrowed as she remembered something.
"Is the little green that was hurt at the hatching okay?" She had
been so focused on Gwynnyth she had forgotten to ask after Walara's
dragonet.

"Her wing is sore and bruised and I heard she's complaining a lot but
she'll be fine. No permanent damage and nothing a little numbweed
couldn't take care of," E'naer replied.

"Oh, that's good. I feel so bad for her having such an experience
being just out of the shell. It would be so hard if Gwynnyth were in
pain."

The sleepy dragon stirred. }:I am not in pain.:{

**And I'm so glad that you aren't.**

"Hatching is chaotic event and unfortunately such things happen now
and then," E'naer said. He noted her empathy and memorized it. Things
like this could affect who got to lead trio's and nine's in later
stages of weyrling training.

"It gives us all the more incentive to train hard, though," Ilyssia
observed. "I mean, I don't _ever_ want Gwynnyth to experience pain,
but most _do_ get scored at one time or another don't they, sir?"

}:Why do you keep discussing pain? This is upsetting you.:{ The
little green was confused. There did not seem to be anything
immediately threatening so why was her rider worried?

**All is well.** Ilyssia soothed, immediately tempering her thoughts
to calm the young dragon. **I am just concerned for the future. For
when we will fly together and flame Thread from the sky, but that
won't be for a long time yet.**

}:Why are you upset by something that is not now?:{

With a chuckle, Ilyssia looked toward the Weyrlingmaster Third. "She
wants to know why I'm worried about anything that isn't now."

"That's very dragon-like. They don't remember the past or worry about
tomorrow, that's our job," E'naer replied.

"Well, that must make fighting Thread easier for them," the girl said
thoughtfully.

"It does," E'naer answered. "Now, if you two have everything well in
hand, I'll check out the next pair," he continued. While he enjoyed
talking with her, he still have half of the class to inspect.

"Thank you, sir, we do," Ilyssia replied, feeling reassured after her
conversation with the Weyrlingmaster Third.
