Annoying Alterations

Writers: Anika
Date Posted: 16th October 2014

Characters: R'taran
Description: R'taran makes the necessary adjustments to his upcoming schedule.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 1 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentor Approved

With a languid stretch, R'taran watched the timid young woman slip from
his weyr. She was a proper female in his opinion, demure and
respectful. Though not beautiful, she was attractive enough and
certainly feminine with her soft curves. He would seek out her
company again he was sure.

Not soon, though, as his spare time was generally spent far more
industriously. If not fulfilling responsibilities as wingrider or
attending to his dragon, he was pouring over drill formations and
thread fighting strategies. As a holder's son he had made every
effort to know everything there was about the job that his father did.
Though he had not originally wanted to come to the Weyr more than six
turns ago, once he impressed Qharterioth, R'taran had thrown himself
into learning all that there was to being a dragon rider, determined
to excel.

Always one to be concerned with tradition, he set himself to learning
about every aspect of Weyrlife and the established practices therein.
Granted, there were times that his holder sensibilities were offended,
but he had learned to reconcile these inner conflicts, always adopting
the most conservative and traditional view that the Weyr had to offer.
He could not deny the many advantages of Weyrlife, first and
foremost being his brown, Qharterioth. He allowed a rare smile as his
thoughts turned to the still sleeping dragon, then threw off his
blankets and rose to dress for the day.

He immediately checked the written schedule that he kept, making
certain of his commitments and their allotted candlemark. Then he
picked up the missive from his mother, lips pursing in discontent. Rizton
had moved up the wedding. Undoubtedly, his irresponsible eldest
brother had gotten his betrothed with child, thus requiring a
change in the timetable. R'taran had no tolerance for such
capriciousness, but his presence was required. As he would be
representing both his Weyr and his family, he intended to make an
impeccable impression at what would undoubtedly be the premier event
in his father's moderate sized holding for turns to come.

R'taran disliked having to make alterations to his schedule, but this event
would require him to request a change in his assignment for that day.
He would need new garments and a suitable gift. He made a list and
carefully considered the time frame, wanting everything taken care of well
ahead of the nuptials. Though he still had several sevendays to prepare,
the brownrider did not want to leave anything to the last minute.

He glanced back at his mother's letter. She asked if he would come
with an escort or if she should have one awaiting him. Considering
his bed partner from last night, he shook his head. That was one
detail he would put off for a time. Neither option sounded
particularly appealing. Confident in his plans, the brownrider headed to
the dining hall for his morning meal.
