A Good First Day

Writers: Devin, Chelle
Date Posted: 30th October 2014

Characters: P'nal, J'kri
Description: P'nal gives a few pointers on J'kri's first day in the Wing.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 9 of Turn 7

It was the first wing practice with the new riders and P'nal had spent
most of it on the ground observing. Clearly there was some work to be
done, but that was normal and expected. He'd been making notes and
would probably assign older riders to pair up with them as usual and
work with them so they'd be ready.

}:Why are you nervous? We are doing fine.:{ Rademerth said.

**I just don't want to make a fool of myself on my first day.**

}:You are smart. Not a fool.:{

J'kri sighed. Ah, dragon logic. The signal came to shift formations
and the pair moved to their new position. J'kri wondered if they might
have been a little slow.

To make it easier, he relayed adjustments through Jodeth. The brown
was doing double duty as his eyes in some situations. }:Rademerth,
remember to come up a bit higher, to meet your mate's wingtip:{

Rademerth had learned to listen to the older dragons, so he did as he
was told. }:Is this good?:{

}:Much better yes. See, now you both are level and can flame for each
other:{ Jodeth explained, also leaving out the part that a wing would be
flying under them so it was necessary to keep altitude since he thought
it obvious.

}:We are in the right place now,:{ Rademerth told his rider.

J'kri gave the blue a thump. **Good job.**

When drills were over and everyone landed, P'nal stepped forward to give
a few parting remarks before G'nir would dismiss them. The Wingsecond
nodded to the young pair, remembering their previous meeting. "J'kri, I think
you're going to fit in very well."

"Thank you, sir." The young man smiled. "I know it's an honor to be in
this Wing and I'll do my best."

"Certainly that's what we expect. Have you met any of your wingmates yet?"
That was always crucial for the new ones to adjust and fit in.

"I've said hello but haven't had much time to chat."

"Ah well I'd advise for you to make time. They're a very helpful
source of information
and advice. Together we are stronger than we are apart. And anyway,
believe me you
will get to know these folks better than you know yourself soon
enough." His life would
depend on it. "There are regular poker games and other things usually."

J'kri nodded. "Okay." He liked meeting new people, although he'd
gotten used to interacting with his small weyrling group.

"Other than that, any issues?" It was good to check in with the new wing members
and make sure they were adjusting. P'nal liked to think it was keeping
a pulse on things.

J'kri shook his head. "We did well in our classes. I'm sure we'll
adjust to flying in a wing." He'd actually gotten impatient, being
held back so long. Not that he was eager to fight Thread, but he
wanted to take his place with the other able-bodied riders.

"I'll leave you to it then but you know where my office is if you need
anything." P'nal turned to head inside, remembering that he was hungry
after all.

"Thank you, sir."
