J'kri and Paetri were on different schedules and couldn't always have
meals at the same time, so J'kri had to find other company. He spotted
someone new with Candidate knots, sitting by herself and looking
unhappy. Maybe she was lonely? Could be a new arrival feeling out of
place.
"Hi," he said as he stepped up to the seat across from her. "May I sit here?"
Saidrene nearly replied with, "It's empty, isn't it?" but a glance to
the young bluerider made her rethink the quip. He was one of those
people that just looked like a nice guy, and as much as she hated
Dragonsfall, she couldn't bring herself to be rude to him.
"Sure." She pushed her tubers, cold by now, around on her plate.
"I'm J'kri, rider to Rademerth," he said as he sat. "Are you new here?"
"Yeah, I came from Dolphin Cove." The tan color of her skin was
probably telling enough that she had been somewhere with a lot of sun.
"My name is Saidrene."
"Nice to meet you. Dolphin Cove, huh? Like the new Weyrwoman?" He took a bite.
"One in the same. She's my mother." Saidrene said, neither happiness
nor loathing present in her voice, just a practice, cool
impassiveness.
"Oh, the Weyrwoman's daughter." He briefly wondered if he should be
more formal, but decided against it. "So you didn't want to move? I've
heard Dolphin Cove is really warm. It must be hard to move to such a
different place."
"Well, I didn't mind moving necessarily, but I had gotten close to
some of the Candidates there." One Candidate in particular, but she
didn't want to talk about Jenackt to a complete stranger.
J'kri nodded. "Leaving people is hard. But if you Impress, you can
visit them. Or if they Impress, they can come visit you. Or your mom
could take you, I bet she has some friends there."
Saidrene had to refrain from snorting, "Yes, my mother has friends
there. Although she and I are not on the best of terms." She lifted
her shoulders in a shrug, "It is kind of nice to see the snow here,
though. We never had it where I lived before."
"It can be very beautiful. And fun to play in." The bluerider grinned.
"Have you gone sledding? Or had a snowball fight?"
"I have seen others sledding," Saidrene said wistfully. "But I wasn't
really sure about how to steer the sled." She admitted.
"I could show you. Uh, not that I'm very good, but I generally avoid
hitting trees and large rocks." She was a pretty girl and he certainly
wouldn't mind spending more time with her.
This brought the first genuine smile to her face, "I would love that!"
"Great! How about on the restday? And would you mind if I brought some
friends along?" Specifically Paetri, but he could help Saidrene meet
other people, too.
"Of course, I would love to meet some more people." Saidrene said
genuinely. If she was going to be living at Dragonsfall then she
needed to start making friends, and it would seem that she had already
made one in J'kri.
