J'kri lay beside her, the afterglow slowly fading. He took her hand,
twining their fingers together. "Paetri?"
There was a soft murmur as Paetri lifted her head from J'kri's
shoulder. She laid against him, soaking in his warmth, but let her
toes stroke along the length of J'kri's leg. "Hm?"
"Do you like any other boys?"
That was an odd question. She tilted her head to look at him and
frowned a little. "Well...not really. I mean, except for M'shan after
my flight, no one has really taken an interest." She paused. "And I
haven't looked either." She rested her head back on his shoulder.
"Why?"
"If something ever happened to me, I don't want you to be alone." Now
that they were going into the Wings, they'd be facing danger all the
time.
That made her sit straight up and she stared down at him, lips turned
downward. "Don't even talk like that. Ever." Her mussed hair fell down
her shoulders as she leaned over to poke him squarely in the chest.
"Not. Ever."
He took her hand and kissed it, eyes full of sadness. "D'ret died. I
could die. You could die. I don't want it to happen, I'll do my best
to make it not happen, but it _could_."
Her face crumpled just a little. "I don't want to even think about it,
J'kri. I don't want to think about living without you. I can't."
"That's why I'm worried. I had you and R'axe to lean on. I don't know
how I would have made it without you. I want to know you'll be okay if
the worst happens." He didn't want to think about it either, but
D'ret's death had been a cold dose of reality.
Her eyes watered and she shook her head. " You know that no one else
wants me, J'kri, or is even interested. I'm not even interested.
Shards, I tried to seduce R'axe and look what happened? I don't think
I've ever heard of him turning down anyone. You're the only one I
want."
"R'axe said he was picky about women." Though now J'kri wondered if
that was true. He sighed. "It's fine if I'm the only one you want. I
just ... hate the thought of leaving you alone." He brushed a strand
of hair away from her face.
She immediately leaned her head against his hand, taking comfort in
his touch before laying back down beside him. "I don't like the idea
either, but you know I don't go out looking for men, J'kri. I wouldn't
even know how. I don't know if I could."
"I could help. I mean, if you want to." He didn't want to push her
into anything, but he really would feel better if she had someone else
to lean on. Just in case.
Paetri went still and slowly looked up at him. "Help me find another
man?" Her brow furrowed. "You do realize how odd that sounds, don't
you?"
J'kri laughed. "Maybe I've embraced weyrlife a little _too_ much."
She laughed softly and looked at him. "Do you really want to see me
with another man? I mean...I didn't mind seeing you with D'ret, but
he loved you and he didn't touch me. I've been all yours since we were
candidates."
He gave it a moment of serious thought. "I guess I'm just not
possessive. I love you and want to be with you, but it wouldn't bother
me if you were with another man." J'kri frowned. "Do you want me to be
possessive?"
She frowned at that. "I don't know. It wouldn't be like you at all, I
guess. I think it would bother me more than it would you."
"If you do find someone else you like, don't feel guilty about it."
His fingers brushed along her arm.
She sighed softly, took his hand and brought it to her mouth to kiss
his fingertips. "Would...would you ever want to be with me and another
man at the same time?"
His face flushed and he bit his lip. "I didn't want to say anything
because I've already made you uncomfortable enough." Just the thought
of it made his body react.
His reaction was hard to miss. Paetri's cheeks flushed at the thought
as nibbled at his fingertips. "Maybe a blue rider who likes girls
too?"
"You really want to?" His heart raced. J'kri had fantasized about it
but didn't know if Paetri would actually be willing.
She squirmed a little against him, the idea of two men wanting her
suddenly filling her with a heat as she nodded. "I'd like to try it."
His eyes went dark with lust. "We'll find someone good for both of
us." Wrapping an arm around her waist, he pulled her even closer and
took her mouth in a hungry kiss.
