Genna

Genna

Genna quietly slipped out of bed, checking the gentle rising and
falling of Lissath's chest before she padded of to Weyrlingstaff's
office. There was always someone there, even this late in the evening.
Seemingly, a Weyrlingmaster's work never ended. Popping her head
around the door, she felt her stomach twitch a little as she realised
it was D'kere tonight.

"Excuse me, is it okay if I have a cup of tea? I can't sleep?"

They did have a strict curfew after all.

D'kere looked up from the book he had been reading, his eyebrows
raising a bit when he saw who it was, "Genna," he folded down the
corner of the page he was reading and set the book aside, "of course,
come in." He motioned for her.

Genna moved in quickly, closing the door behind her in one swift
movement before taking a seat. She had intended on going to the common
room for her tea, but somehow she couldn't decline this invitation.
"You're up late, Sir."

The Weyrlingmaster's Second rose and made to quick cups of tea with
the hot water from the klah warmer. He wasn't much of a tea person,
but he had been trying to acclimate himself to the taste. "Someone has
to babysit." He said, the hint of a grin tugging at his lips as he
passed Genna her cup of tea.

"Is there a particular reason you cannot sleep?" He inquired.

Genna shrugged slightly, trying to hide her blush by looking down in
her teacup. "I don't know, I guess I'm just lying awake, thinking."
Eager to change the subject, she looked back up with a slight twinkle
in her eyes. "You must feel so old with so much babies around!"

D'kere blinked, "Well, no, I don't... Or well, I didn't until you said
something." Did the Weyrlings really see him as _that_ much older?

Genna laughed merrily at that. She had intended to tease, but she
hadn't thought it would catch that well. "Ahh don't feel bad! It
grants you a certain authority."

The quiet bronzerider had never thought himself the authority type,
and he knew that the only reason he had any hinged on the color of his
dragon's hide, "Besides Luneth, your class is pretty good at doing
what their told. Otherwise I would have to use my 'Weyrlingmaster's
Second' voice."

An amused chuckle escaped Genna. "Ooh, I have to hear that! Can I hear
it, pretty please?" she grinned teasingly, for the moment completely
forgetting herself and her manners.

D'kere grinned a little and shook his head, "No, ma'am, I can't do it
on command. It just sort of comes out in the heat of the moment." He
didn't think he could even replicate it unless he was barking orders
at errant Weyrlings.

"Oh dear, do I have to be bad to be able to hear that voice?" Genna
said with sparkles in her eyes still. If she didn't stop to think
about everything that came out of her mouth, talking to D'kere was so
easy.

The Weyrlingmaster's Second shook his head, "Genna, I cannot imagine
you ever being bad."

"Did you know I was once caught breaking and entering back home?"
Genna grinned sheepishly. She'd certainly been more rebellious back
home. Yet, somehow, now she was away from her mother's disapproving
eyes and gifted with the responsibility of a baby gold, rebellion
didn't seem as enticing anymore.

The man's eyebrows lifted with interest at the story, "And what were
you after?" D'kere couldn't imagine the young gold Weyrling, who he
would say was a very sweet young woman, being a thief.

"Food," Genna grinned a bit sheepishly. "I was going to leave marks,
but the kitchens were closed and.." she trailed off, looking at him
with a lopsided grin. "I used to be a wild child, sir."

D'kere shook his head, unable to imagine that, "And I was the quiet
loner whom everyone was sure would impress to a green or blue. We all
change I suppose."

"That we do," Genna nodded, more serious now. Mostly for the better
though. Change is good for a person.

"Now that I have bored you with conversation do you think you will be
able to sleep?" There was the hint of a grin.

"Oh you are far from boring," Genna replied at once. She recognized a
dismissal when she heard one, though, and got up from her seat. "But I
really should try to get some sleep again. Thank you for the tea."

"Of course. Sleep well, Genna."
