Firm but delicate footsteps sounded down the hall as Yriadha walked
quietly to the infirmary. The news that one of her drudges was with
child wasn't a welcome one, considering that the girl wasn't wed,
but she still needed to see a midwife. Children were far too
precious to risk.
Stepping into the infirmary, Yriadha glanced around until she found
the woman she was looking for. "Parme, do you have a moment?"
"Yriadha," Parme acknowledged the Headwoman. "Of course I do. What's
the matter?"
"I have a drudge that I would like you to see to. This young woman
decided to get with child without the benefit of a husband." Yriadha's
voice carried her displeasure keenly. "I've told her to see the
healers, but I would also like you to check her.
"Ahh, such a pity," Parme said with a soft sigh, though it was more
pity than displeasure with her. "Is she coming in to the Infirmary
herself?"
"I do not know if she is bringing her now future husband with her, but
she should be along directly." Yriadha crossed her arms and drummed
her fingers against her arms. "The girl is healthy, but I want to know
immediately if there are any issues that would stop her from working."
"You do understand any complications of the pregnancy are not mine to
disclose?" Parme asked with a serious expression.
"Perhaps they are not, but she will have to disclose them if she wants
me to work with her about proper duties during her pregnancy." Yriadha
replied calmly, but without empathy for the girl. She had little
tolerance for anyone shirking a duty, pregnancy or not.
"Oh yes, I can see that and I will certainly urge her to be frank with
you, but it is not my job to inform you about such things," Parme said
without much emotion. She had to draw her boundaries after all.
Yriadha arched a brow. "And if you do not and she does not, then her
duties will not change."
"Ah yes, that is the young lady's decision," Parme shrugged. Parme was
pretty sure she could convince the girl to do the right thing, should
the need arise. But at the end of the day, it wasn't her call to make.
"See that she makes the right one, Parme." Yriadha met Parme's eyes
with flinty determination. "I'd hate to have to discharge her."
"I'd hate to see that too," Parme said, meeting her eyes. She didn't
like the way Yriadha treated people. She could understand the need for
strictness, but there was such a thing as being too hard. "Now if
you'll excuse me, it seems I have a visitor to prepare for."
"Yes, you do. I'll expect reports on her health, Parme." Yriadha
inclined her head and then turned on her heel. "Regularly."
Parme raised her eyebrows in wonder. "I'm sure the Healers will be
happy to oblige." Hers was an informal service, always had been, and
she wasn't about to be counted as one of Yriadha's staff members.
"And from you, Parme." Yriadha closed the door behind her, her
footsteps clicking down the hall.
Parme's eyebrows were still raised as she stared at the closed door.
She had never been a fan of Yriadha, but now she was downright
annoyed. Did she fancy herself the Lady Holder? With a sigh and a
shake of her head, she turned back to her work.
