"Is this seat open?"

"It is empty isn't it?" Saidrene grumbled without bothering to look up
at whomever was asking the question. If she had other people with her
then they would be sitting with her wouldn't they? As it was she was
alone. She hated this place. Dragonsfall was the worst pit of a Weyr
her mother had ever dragged them to and she was hating every minute of
it. It was cold and the people were ridiculously boring, and the snow
was disgusting. She wished she was at Dolphin Cove where she belonged
but her mother had ruined that for her too.

"Whoa, someone is in a snit." Even though the words were harsh they
were delivered with a good-tempered smile as R'axe took the seat next
to the young girl with the long, inky black hair.

Rolling her eyes, Saidrene glanced sideways and froze. Sitting beside
her was the most beautiful man she had ever seen. **That hair... Those
eyes... Ugh, his smile.** Vtols flittered in zigzag patterns across
her stomach. Why was he sitting beside _her_ of all people!

**Don't blush. Don't blush.** She coached herself.

"Sorry. One of those days... Or months." Saidrene replied.

R'axe grinned at that. He had experienced those days and months
before, "Well, if it is any consolation it gets better." He thought
the girl younger than twenty, maybe sixteen or seventeen if he was
guessing correctly. For once he wasn't sitting in the Dining Cavern to
pick anyone up, he really did just want to eat his meal and the girl
hadn't seemed like the talkative type... Until he sat down.

Saidrene snorted, causing R'axe to chuckle, as she cocked an eyebrow,
"Yeah, well, when your problems tie into your family then you are sort
of doomed with them forever."

The bluerider stuffed a bite of meat into his mouth, chewing
thoughtfully before responding, "Hm, family. Can't live with them,
can't live without them."

The teenager huffed, "I dunno, I think I could live without mine."

R'axe's eyebrows raised, "That bad huh? Do I know them?"

Saidrene hesitated for a moment, but she figured there was no point in
lying, "Yeah, my mother's the Weyrwoman."

The man's eyes widened a bit, "Ouch, the Weyrwoman's kid, huh? That
has to suck."

"You have no idea." Saidrene replied, thinking back to that horrific
moment when she had walked in to find her mother and boyfriend naked
on her desk together. It wasn't one of those images that you could
forget very quickly.

"Why did you come with her to Dragonsfall then? You are old enough to
be making your own decisions... Aren't you?" He looked at her
assessingly.

Saidrene sat a little straighter, "I am seventeen." But then her
shoulders sagged a little as she continued, "I got into a major fight
with my boyfriend," if you could call have called Jenackt that, "it
was... Nasty to say the least."

R'axe nodded slowly, "So you decided your mother was the lesser of the
two evils then?"

"Yeah. I thought it would be easier not being around him. Not seeing
him." She sighed and ran her finger around the rim of her cup. The
klah inside it had long since chilled, "He probably hates me though."

The bluerider remained silent, decidedly stuffing a roll into his
mouth since he was _not_ the person who should be giving relationship
advice, especially to the Weyrwoman's daughter. He got into enough
trouble without inviting more.

Saidrene cut her eyes sideways at R'axe, "This is the part where you
insert some helpful piece of wisdom, you know."

"Mou'f full. Can't talk. Sowwy." R'axe pointed to his mouth.

The teenager rolled her eyes, "You suck at this pep talking thing."

R'axe swallowed and then barked out a laugh, "Yeah, sorry, the wrong
rider sat down beside of you if you were looking for a pep talk. I
don't do relationships. Period. I take people to bed, we have a good
time, and that's that. Relationships only end up getting someone
hurt." And why hurt when there was so much pleasure to be had? He
called them "icky-sticky relationships" himself.

Saidrene was beginning to see the wisdom in why many weyrfolk did not
try to keep monogamous relationships. She was raised weyrbred but she
hadn't wanted to share Jenackt... Especially not with her _mother_ of
all people.

"Maybe I will get lucky and Impress so I can leave this egg-forsaken iceburg."

"I like you kid, you say the funniest things." R'axe said, chuckling
with amusement as he took a sip of his klah, "There are people here
that like to have fun. You just have to know how to find them." He
winked.

}:Careful. _Weyrwoman's Daugher_.:{ Jayth barged into his thoughts.

**Ease up. I am not going to do anything stupid.** R'axe assured his dragon.

"I am not really interested in having fun." Not when all she could
think about was Jenackt.

**Curse him.** She thought, grinding her back molars together.

"Well, should you change your mind, come and find me. I am here every
evening." R'axe winked good-naturedly, grabbed his empty tray and left
the table.

Saidrene sighed and turned sullenly back to her chilled cup of klah.

"Is this seat open?" A different voice asked.

Without looking Saidrene responded with the same grumble, "It is empty
isn't it?"
