Extra Practice

Writers: Avery, Heather
Date Posted: 25th July 2014

Characters: D'kere, Talwynn
Description: D'kere catches Talwynn at some illicit practice.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 10 of Turn 7

D'kere fell into step beside of Talwynn when he noticed her crossing the
Weyrbowl.
Her face was a bit flushed as if she had been exercising but it was the
strong whiff
of firestone that caught his attention first.

"Talwynn," he said by way of greeting, a small smile twitching to life on
his face.

Everything felt sore, especially her weak hand. She needed the longest
soak in a heated bathing pool. So naturally, she got greeted by someone
she knew.

"Hey, D'kere," she said with a jaunty wave.

"I am not sure if you are aware but you reek if firestone." There was a
teasing lilt to his voice as he glanced sideways at her.

"I had no idea," she said, keeping as neutral a face as possible.

D'kere grinned at that, as if he didn't work with Weyrlings stretching the
truth all
the time, "Come on," he coaxed, "you can tell me. I did take you to my
favorite
fishing hole after all."

"Oh, well, since you're so generous..." She stopped walking, then scuffed
the ground with her boot like an errant teenager.

"I took one of those low-quality bags from last Fall. After it was over.
Nobody missed it." she added defensively.

D'kere crossed his arms over his chest, fighting to keep a smile at bay,
"And what did you do with it?"

He had her. "Fed it to Riveth. You know how the dragons get when they
can't fly the Fall, and she wanted to flame, and _I_ wanted to see her
flame. And she still can."

An icy blast of wind barreled through the Weyrbowl. D'kere tugged up the
collar on his jacket, "Don't tell me you didn't at least try tossing it a
bit... You
know, for old time's sake." Clearly the bronzerider was no fool. "How did
it go?"

She looked around to see how many people were nearby. "If it makes you
feel better, I wasn't alone for throwing it." She didn't want him to think
that she was a complete idiot.

"I never doubted that you wouldn't take the necessary precautions. You
don't strike
me as the foolhardy type." He said and then asked again, "How did it go?"

"I hit - my friend's dragon," she admitted. "Only on the first throw.
Didn't go far enough. I can catch fine, though."

Throwing long range to a flying target was often a problem for Weyrlings
so D'kere
could imagine exactly what she was describing, "You know, off the record,
should you
like to practice Kenirath and I are fairly patient teachers. And we only
come with a
small fee."

That wasn't something she'd expected. Being scolded for taking away the
firestone,
or for doing something dangerous, yes. But offering help?

"What's the fee?" she asked, nervousness entering her tone.

"A date." D'kere said simply, as if this were a logical business negotiation.

"Wh - what?" she blurted out, looking at him as though he'd suddenly laid
an egg.

The man winced sympathetically and nodded his head, although in good
humor, "I know,
I know, it's a steep price but as I said, Kenirath and I are good at
helping."

Her desire for some real re-training warred with her confusion about
D'kere's motivations. Was this some kind of pity - make her feel good
about herself via a date, softening the blow that she couldn't handle
things? But she couldn't resist a challenge.

"As long as it's not going to take you away from, y'know. Real work with
real fliers." Her tone sharp-edged.

D'kere rolled his eyes, "I can manage my time. Kenirath and I have the two
candlemark before evening meal off if you want to start then."

"I'd be okay with that," she said. Wasn't like she had much of a schedule.
"And as
for the other, what were your ideas?"

"The date?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. Was she really that worried
about it?

She kicked a rock and watched it skitter. "I don't know how they work."

D'kere smiled, his eyes softening, "Just trust me, hm? Let's just get through
practice tomorrow and then we will worry about the date."

It sounded sensible to her. "Okay. What will we be doing - do I need
anything special?" Shards...she was going to need new straps. New proper
straps.

"Bring your swimsuit and a regular change of clothing. That's all you'll
need." He assured her.

She nodded once and wished she had a better feeling. "Can do."
