Sethanos was disappointed in his son's rash actions. He had thought
that maybe he could get a land-based job and spend a little more time
with his wife, but if his family was going to continue to do stupid
things, he was going to have to keep earning more. Which is why he
needed a reassignment.
He knocked at the Hallmaster's door and waited to be acknowledged.
"Enter," came the bark even as Relik was trying to shuffle around some
of the rosters he was putting in order. His desk was controlled chaos.
"Hallmaster." Sethanos slipped in and nodded politely at the leader. "I've
come to ask about a new assignment."
Relik looked at the knots first, trying to place the man. One of these days
he was going to have the men sew their names into their tunics. It made it
so much easier especially as seacrafters were an in-and-out bunch and he'd
never remember everyone otherwise. "Oh? Where are you posted now?"
"Sorry, sir,. I'm Sethanos, currently working in repairing the fishing
boats," he
explained. "My son is getting married very soon, and I'd like to help him
build
up for a household."
"So what is it that you would like to do then?" A repairman...a
carpenter..if he
could manage as a ship's carpenter, then he could do well enough. Those were
valuable for certain.
"Is there a better paying repair or construction position?" He was good with
his
hands and his work. "Maybe on the docks, or something bigger than the fisher
boats?"
"What are your skills? As in...what sort of work could you do beyond that?"
Relik
needed to know if he was up to the job.
"If it's made of wood, I can put it back together better than it has been."
"Have you ever tried for a ship carpenter job? Ever worked with one?" Relik
didn't know what sort of craftsmanship the man had or even if he was worth his
salt. Of course he'd have to see some work before there was a hard and fast decision.
"I sailed as a hand on the big ships, but my repair's been confined to the
smaller ones."
"I could send you down to the shipyard. Give you a few sevendays to try it.
If you think you can, there might be a permanent post opening for a turn or so." He
didn't know if that was what the man had in mind.
"That sounds excellent," he said. "I'm sorry for the extra trouble, sir."
"It's no problem. Good to have people trained and ready should a need arise
and obviously I am a man who believes in bettering yourself through work."
Relik coughed and took a drink of some water on his desk. "Report to Master
Kaphrad tomorrow and he'll get you in place."
It wasn't that Sethanos didn't enjoy sailing, or he would have been in the
wrong craft. But the lure of being on the water was faded, while working to
make sure the boats were safe so others came home was something he'd found
rewarding. He knew his work helped make sure men came home when squalls
happened. Besides, he'd wanted to be closer to his wife as their kids began
to move out. Ah, if only his oldest hadn't been so sharding rash.
"Understood. I hope to make you proud, sir."
