Genna

Genna

Genna was humming quietly to herself, quite content with her latest
plan. She had a tiny bit of free time and now that she had made a
dragonriding friend, she had a good idea of what to do with it. There
was a market in a minor Hold she used to go to every now and then and
if she could get Paetri on board, they could between there to shop for
hatching party dresses! Because if she did impress, maybe even.. no
she shouldn't go there. But if she did impress, she wanted to look
great on her last social event for Faranth knew how long.

"Paetri, you in?" she called out cheerfully as she knocked on the
young rider's door.

"Come in!" Sitting on her little couch, Paetri had just taken off her
boots and stretched out her legs with a sigh. She looked up and
smiled. "Oh, Genna! Come in, please. How are you?"

"I'm just great, Paet!" Genna had no qualms on adopting nicknames for
her 'adopted' friends right away. "Just great. How couldn't I be, with
eggs on the sands! It's all so exciting." She flopped down next to
Paetri on the couch as if she had sat there many a time before.

Paet? The familiar nickname made her smile. "I know. Have you gotten
to see them yet? And a gold..." She looked over at Genna; she'd never
really had a female friend her own age before and found that Genna's
instant ease around her was nice. "You must be really excited."

"Oh yes, they're gorgeous! I've only seen a clutch once before, when I
visited last hatching, but I hardly had any time to look at them with
so much happening." Genna's eyes sparkled with excitement. "And to see
a gold egg, that's pretty special too! I so wonder how she will look
like when she hatches."

"Well, you'll get to see her up close, won't you?" Paetri's eyes
warmed. "You never know who she'll choose."

"Well, I'm not getting my hopes up!" Genna said with a laugh. "I'd be
just as happy if a green came my way. I could end up as your wingmate,
that would be fun." And it seemed like a much more reasonable dream.

Paetri nodded, completely understanding. "It would be. But don't
discount anything. Just think, soon you'll get to touch the eggs. That
is amazing. It's something you'll never forget. And the hatching party
is pretty fun if you like dancing, but if you Impress, you'll be so
involved with your dragon and so exhausted, that'll be the last thing
on your mind."

"Well, isn't that a coincidence!" Genna exclaimed, clapping her hands
together in excitement. "That was just what I was coming to see you
about! Do you have a dress yet, for the party?"

"Well...no... I didn't go to the last one. I'm usually too busy for
that sort of thing." She shrugged. "I've never been much for parties,
I guess." The few parties she'd been forced to attend at home had been
miserable experiences. She'd felt like a herdbeast or a runner trotted
out to potential buyers, and always had come up lacking.

"You didn't go!?" Genna eyebrows raised in surprise. "Aren't they
supposed to be the events of the Turn?" She cocked her head, thinking.
"Well, this time you will have to come. Either to congratulate me on
impressing, or to help me forget I didn't. You will come, right?"

"Well, I suppose they are." Paetri acknowledged. "But if you Impress,
you'll find that you really don't have time for that sort of thing.
The dragons, especially when they're young, keep you really busy." She
tucked a stray hand of hair behind her ears, thinking. Then she
nodded. "Of course I will. I'll be there for what ever you need."

"Thanks," Genna jumped up to hug Paetri. "You're a gem. Now, if you
are going to come, you will need a dress! Please, can we go buy one
together? I know just the perfect place!"

"Well, I really don't have much marks, Genna. I've been too busy to
earn any." She hugged her back. "But we can go look and maybe I can
afford something. Where did you want to go?"

"There's this awesome market just off Amber Hills, you can between
there, right?" Genna's eyes lit up with excitement. Having a
dragonrider as a friend was both useful and fun, it seemed!

"Yes. It's not too far from where I grew up." She nodded, remembering the
area.

"Oh that's awesome," Genna smiled. "And don't worry about marks, my
father sent me plenty for my birthingday." What was wrong with sharing
that with a friend, right? It wasn't like her mother could stop her,
like she had before. She jumped to her feet. "Want to go right now?"

"Right now?" Paetri looked down at her boots and then back up at her
excited friend before laughing softly. "Sure. We can." She tugged the
boots back on. "Let me see if Camilth can pull herself away from
Rademerth for longer than a candlemark."

"Yes, now!" Genna laughed, exciting of the prospect of an outing. It
might be her last for a very, very long time. "Is she in love?" she
grinned at that thought when Paetri mentioned Camilth. That was just
too cute to imagine!

Camilth was sulky about having to leave off her flirting, but arrived
at the weyr in only a few moments. Paetri gestured for Genna to follow
her and continued explaining. "Oh no...Greens don't really do that. They
flirt. Rademerth is her clutchmate and they're close." She thought of
J'kri, Rademerth's rider and had to keep a blushing smile from her
face. "Did you bring a jacket?"

"Why are you blushing, then?" Genna said in a teasing tone, before she
held up her jacket. "And I may have come prepared," she admitted
sheepishly.

Paetri looked over at her and grinned before shrugging. "Because I
like to think about his rider." She tugged at her braid and cleared
her throat as she began strapping Camilth in preparation. "Do you have
a date yet for this dance?"

"Oh Faranth, no," Genna laughed, though maybe just a tad too fast.
"I'm glad I got a break from stuff like that now I got out of looking
for a suitable husbands. Are you going with.. Radmerth's rider?"

Paetri recognized that too fast response and eyed Genna with good
humor, but didn't press. "I can relate." She paused, then had to think
about Genna's question. "He's my best friend. We spend time together.
But J'kri...I don't know if we're a couple. We're just...together
alot." She finished strapping Camilth and the green hunkered down to
allow them both to climb aboard.

"Well, as long as the both of you are happy with that," Genna smiled.
It sure beat making each other false promisee like her parents had.
With some help, she climbed aboard the green, feeling a little rush in
her stomach at the thought of flying again.

Paetri strapped her in carefully, double checking to make sure Genna
was secure before strapping herself in with precision. With a mental
nudge, Camilth leapt into the air, took the mental image of the market
and blinked into nothingness. After a few short breaths, they appeared
over the market and with the ease of much practice, Camilth landed in
a clear area nearby.

By the time they landed, Genna was still giddy with excitement. "Does
it ever get old, flying?" she almost shouted to Paetri.

Paetri laughed and unstrapped, then unstrapped Genna before sliding
down Camilth's side. "Never. It's always wonderful. You'll see." She
offered her a hand to help step down.

"Awesome," Genna laughed. She couldn't imagine it ever growing old,
but to hear Paetri say it was even better. "Okay, so what kind of
thing are you looking for? Got a colour-scheme in mind yet?"

She shook her head. "No. That was really my mother's area." She gave
an embarrassed little shrug. "I'm afraid I was just pushed into what
ever dress she had in mind and shoved to the party. I suppose since
I'm a green rider, I should wear green...I guess."

"Well you don't have to, of course, but it would look good on you. Maybe a
nice forest green with gold accents?" Genna squinted a little as she
imagined the dress and colours on Paetri.

Paetri shook her head. "Lets worry about getting you done first. We can't
stay gone too long, really. If I don't get a dress, we can always come back
later."

"Sure, let's see what they have first!,' Genna agreed a she dragged her new
friend of towards on of the brightly coloured stalls.
