Characters: Devyn, J'darin
Description: J'darin comes seeking Devyn after Cardella's Flight but doesn't
find her. It makes him go, lets face it, a little crazy.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 24 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: G'nir, Cardella
A blissful 10 days had passed since Devyn suprised J'darin by actually
moving in with him. They had been beyond happy, and he had - so far
- been able to show her that she _was_ very important to him and they
had spent more time together than in their entire relationship.
He worried that all this time with him would finally betray him, and
show her his true colors.
If _that_ happened, well, he'd help her pack.
Or so it was in his mind.
In reality, they were well-matched and having a weyrmate steadied the
bronzerider in ways he had not ever imagined.
Then...
Cardella's dragon rose.
Always fond memories of the _very_ young greenrider crossed his mind,
and though they had successfully navigated their way into a sincere
friendship, it was not a huge surprise to feel the overpowering desire
to _win_ again. Hasaarth, almost more than his rider, had wanted to
win Awenth again.
The loss of her to _G'nir_ or all people had driven J'darin to anger
and Hasaarth to bugle in defiance. There was something about his
relationship with the Weyrleader that set both dragon and rider on
complete edge, though certainly the two had never had any type of
serious disagreements. Mostly.
Growling at a woman who came too close, offering relief, he pushed her
away and headed straight to his own weyr, where his new weyrmate
should be waiting for him.
Surely she would know and know that he would want her after...
Surely.
He stalked into the weyr, calling for Devyn, and heard nothing but his
own frustration answering him back.
His body was afire, though he was maintaining tight control. But she
wasn't even _here_!
"What the sharding..." he swore. Where was she?
Devyn was in the Dining Cavern browsing through the buffet of items
that the kitchens had prepared. Drills had been heavy that day and the
petite greenrider was feeling it. Being a greenrider herself, and
having lived at the Weyr for Turns, Devyn rarely ever paid attention
to a rising green dragon. They happened far too frequently to garner
much of her attention.
Her mind drifted back to the past sevenday of her 'new' life. Having
lived in the same weyr ever since she Impressed Ellyth it still felt
different walking in to the Weyrlingmaster's weyr every evening
but...she liked it. She also liked being able to see J'darin every
evening and have his uninterrupted attention for a while. **I might
get _too_ attached.** Devyn thought, turning away from the buffet line
with her plate in hand.
**Oak... find Devyn...** He sent to his brown flit, and who, being
well-trained, set off immediately to look for his "new" person. He
had adopted Devyn with the same ease that Hasaarth adopted Ellyth into
his weyr.
Hassarth was still fighting his own disappointment and was, for the
moment, useless incommunicating with Ellyth, so he left it to Oak.
Oak popped out of /between/ above Devyn long enough to be seen and
chitter at her, almost sounding scolding, then he had gone straight
back to J'darin with the picture of where she was.
When Oak returned, showing her sitting in the dining hall like nothing
was happening, he groaned. What was the point of having a weyrmate
if she wasn't here when he needed her?
Isn't that what weyrmates did?
Obviously torn and aching, he debated what to do. He could handle the
lust, it was not the first time he'd lost a green flight and not
wanted to sleep with one of the random women waiting.
But he wanted Devyn... Hasaarth had never caught Ellyth and he wanted
to share _some_ of this dragon lust with her, at least once.
Maybe he should go to her...
Tensing his shoulders against the people in the corridors, he left the
weyr he now shared with her and went down to the dining caverns.
He made his way inside, looking for her among all the tables, his
height giving him a bit of advantage. He had no idea what he was
going to say, but he was going to find her and say _something_.
Devyn had frowned in confusion when Oak had shown up in the Dining
Cavern. She could hear the scold in his tone, which only serve to
bewilder her further as he went back /between/. Was J'darin looking
for her? She would have thought he would still be with the Weyrlings.
**Ellyth have you heard from Hasaarth?**
The green, who was lounging with one of the blue's in the Weyr, turned
her attention toward her rider, }:No, I believe he was otherwise busy
trying to catch Awenth.:{ The green snorted, }:That's more effort than
he has ever made for me.:{
Devyn's eyebrows shot up into her hairline, **Is that _jealousy_ I hear?**
Ellyth didn't reply but returned her attention back to the blue
dragon. Back in the Dining Cavern Devyn chuckled at her dragon's mood,
shaking her head. She had said that Hasaarth had _tried_ to catch
Awenth which meant he must not have succeeding. Silently Devyn was
pleased at that. She did find it annoying that Hasaarth had never once
caught Ellyth. He hadn't even _flown_ in her last flight. Devyn
recognized Cardella's name, knew who she was, and had heard her
briefly mentioned as someone that J'darin had spent time with, but she
didn't know much more than that.
He saw her then, and headed straight toward her.
When he got close enough to speak quietly, he said, "Devyn... " His
voice was a bit choked with unfamiliar emotions and, yes, lust. All
the searching for her had alleviated his immediate needs, but he had
so wanted her to be there...
"I went to find you .. after the Flight... but you weren't there."
He finished with an odd lilt to his voice that sounded almost hurt.
His tones were soft, conversational, between her and him. He did not
want the entire dining cavern to hear him, after all.
Devyn blinked up at J'darin, "Oh, I'm.. sorry? Ellyth didn't tell me
that you and Hasaarth were in a flight until just a moment ago." They
hadn't really talked about all the specifics of being weyrmated in the
past ten days. He'd never sought her out after his last flights so
she'd thought nothing of trying to make herself available in their
weyr should he be in one.
He blinked at her for a moment, confused. He was sure he had gone to
her after flights before, and he knew she had come to him after one of
her flights, instead of staying with P'nal. He remembered... and he
never wanted anyone but her, any way.
Keeping his voice quiet, he said, "Next time I'll stay in the room
then, and I won't bother seeking you out at all, weyrmate." It was
not the first time he'd called her that, but this time, it was
definitely with something different. It wasn't hurt or anger, but
it was disappointment, more than anything.
He thought being weyrmated meant... something. Maybe it didn't, after all.
"I"ll go take a cold swim and see you later, when you're free." And
he did, he really did, start to turn away. He was so confused.
Maybe he'd been right after all, and no one could love him and only him.
Devyn frowned, the bench screeching as she pushed hastily to her feet
and put a hand to J'darin's forearm, "J'darin wait." Confusion marred
her features as she searched the bronzerider's face. What had gotten
in to him? Was it really just the fact that he'd lost a flight? It was
only a green flight after all, and if she had known that he had been
participating in a flight she would have been more than happy to be
waiting for him. "Why are you acting like this? It was just a
mistake."
His face was almost comical in the vulnerability that showed in those
dark blue eyes. There was a snap of anger shining there, too, but he kept
that hidden for the most part. His voice came out slowly as if the
words were hard, and he didn't react to her hand on his arm at all.
He neither pulled away nor stepped closer.
"I just... thought you would be home. And I thought you'd want me to
come to you after a flight, not stay with some random woman in the
flight rooms. So I did, I came home." He shrugged it off as
something that didn't matter, though it clearly did. "I was thinking
being weyrmated .. changed ... things. But it doesn't, does it?"
"Of course it changes things." Devyn was starting to get frustrated.
Wasn't J'darin hearing what she was saying? He was acting like one
missed flight was the end of the world, or at least, the end of their
"weyrmated" relationship. "I do want you to come to me after a flight!
I never said I didn't!"
He could not explain it to her, not without sounding like a complete
wherry's ass, and they were still in the dining caverns.
"But you weren't there, and I can't very well attack you in the middle
of the dining caverns." He waved his hand around, and went on.
"Although maybe some of them would like the show. "
He paused, looking down at her and finally taking her hand from his
arm and holding it between his own. His voice softened as he tried to
understand his own reaction. He searched her face, wanting to
believe it was different. It had to be different didn't it?
Weyrmating was like marriage.. wasn't it?
"I guess.. I just wanted you and you weren't there, and I thought you
would be, now. " The emphasis was on the word "now". He paused,
nodding to her unspoken comments, even if he didn't know it. "But, it
was just a green flight, and I didn't _need_ you. And if you say you
want me to come to you, I will keep trying to do that, even if you
aren't going to be there. After all, there are never any guarantees
in a weyr, even in weyrmates." The last part was taken directly from
his innumerable lectures to weyrlings on fidelity in the Weyr, but it
might not sound currently as convincing as it did to his students.
He had somehow always believed when he did find someone he wanted to
share his weyr with, it _would_ be different.
Devyn reached out for his hand, not caring if they were beginning to
receive stares from some of the people in the Dining Cavern, "Come on,
let's get you cooled down first and then we'll talk." She suggested.
So far she had never seen an ornery bone in J'darin's body but he was
taking the cake that day. She hoped that once the green flight was
out of his system he would be a little easier to reason with.
Ornery was a good description for him, at the moment.
But despite that, he loved her so very much. Even if weyrmating
wasn't at all what he had thought...
**Wrong again, silly bronzerider** He thought to himself, but he was
more than happy to take her hand and head out of the public view.
"Maybe a bath ...and maybe a glass of wine... then a talk." He
agreed, slipping his hand free, but only to wrap his arm around her
shoulders.
He did love her, oh so much. He could only hoped she loved him.
