Corran tolerated the morning shifts, though truth be told he was more
of a night person. His patrol had been quiet so far, with few people
stirring around the Hold. He'd already walked the outside portion of
his section once, and was ducking inside for his scheduled break and
some additional klah before resuming. So it was with relief that he
recognized a familiar face, and he altered his steps so he could keep
pace with her.
"How are you this morning?" he inquired.
Barenziah smiled as Corran fell into step beside of her. She liked the
short guard and was familiar with him because of her brother's place
in the hold guard at Amber Hills. Her brother, Rynthian, was one of
those types that just made friends with everyone, while she had always
been a bit more prickly because of her fiery temper.
"I am well. I was just on my way to bring you boys some breakfast."
She held up a covered basket.
He placed his hand over his heart dramatically. "My hero."
"You bet I am." She smiled, flashing white teeth, "I know you men
become big babies when you get hungry. Can't have that now can we?"
"Indeed we couldn't. A hungry guard could miss something important,
and then where would we be?"
As they walked into the guard quarters Rynthian perked up from where
he had been slumped at the table inside, "Barrey!"
The redhead glowered at him, "Stop calling me that in public or it
will catch on!"
"I promise never to use it," Corran said, then waved at Rynthian.
"She's bringing us food."
Rynthian stood and wrapped his arms around his sister and planted a
kiss to her cheek, "You are the best sister in the world. I was about
to starve!" He snatched the basket from her hands.
Barenziah just shook her head, a fond smile on her lips for her
brother, "Yes, well, I do know how hard it is for you to remember to
eat sometimes. What are you going to do when I leave with Faldrimme
for Hidden Meadows?"
Her brother turned wounded eyes onto her, even as he stuffed part of a
sweet roll into his mouth, "You arf' leafing me?"
"Don't talk with your mouth full," her brows lowered, "I don't know
how Corran puts up with you."
"By having terrible manners, according to my parents," he said with a
straight face. "I didn't know you were leaving."
Barenziah pulled a chair out from the table and sat down, flicking her
fiery braid over her shoulder, "I am. I have been asked to be
Faldrimme's chaperone when we go." She quirked an eyebrow, humor
glinting in her blue eyes, "I guess that makes me the old maid."
"We'll definitely miss you. Is it permanent? Though I hope you enjoy
the traveling, it can be nice to visit new places."
"I am not sure yet if it will be permanent. I think her father is
hoping that she might be a candidate for wife there at Hidden Meadows.
I guess if all goes well and she ends up staying then I will too."
Barenziah had never been to Hidden Meadows before so she hoped that
the place proved to be a little more lively than Amber Hills.
"Is that something you'd enjoy?"
Barenziah shrugged, "I guess so, it is at least more interesting than
sitting around here sewing doylies." She cut her eyes sideways at her
brother, "Or looking after this one." She reached up and ruffled his
hair.
"Hey." Rynthian ducked away from his sister's hand, "This one here is
all anti-marriage so don't let her fool you. She's ecstatic about
escaping."
"Is it that terrible here?" His voice was carefully neutral - he
remembered how he'd felt about Amber Hills when he first arrived.
Barenziah chuckled, "No, it's not, necessarily, but at twenty-eight
I'm not getting any younger. This is my chance to travel and see some
new places." It wasn't as if she were going to find a husband at Amber
Hills.
"Hopefully you'll like it there. And perhaps you can at least come
back for the Gathers." Corran had to admit that he preferred the ones
here; the runner shows were fantastic and the quality of the food was
outstanding.
"I am sure we will be back for some of them. Faldrimme is very close
with her father." Barenziah admitted, which she didn't mind, she did
enjoy getting the chance to see Rynthian and her parents.
"Let me know next time you're around. I'd hate to miss the return of
your sparkling smile." He gave a quick grin.
Barenziah flashed a grin, "Oh, Corran, you are a charmer."
Rynthian snorted.
