Penryn smiled as he brought the Lord Regent a fresh glass of wine. "Are you enjoying yourself, sir?"
Ishek nodded. "Very much. In fact, I'm almost overwhelmed." He gratefully accepted the glass. "It's a surprise having all of this in my name. And having to get up there..." It had shaken Ishek, but he was slowly getting over that now. "But it's wonderful. And you and Lady Thalia did this?"
"Lady Thalia did most of it," the steward said quickly. She really did deserve all the credit. "It's too bad that so many people couldn't come and see her fine work."
Ishek nodded. "She put an amazing amount of work into it. I hope all those who are here will be as amazed by the work. And you, are you enjoying yourself?"
"Of course. Especially now that my speech is done." Penryn gave Lord Ishek a knowing smile. He had a feeling they were both more men of action than men of words.
"Ah, yes, the speeches." Ishek tried not to grimace. "Have you spoken with the Lady Thalia, and is she doing all right? I know it must be hard for her right now."
He nodded. "She's putting on a brave face, but the Weyrwoman's death has shaken her, I think."
"She's lost quite a lot." Ishek said softly. "It is almost surprising that she's here, instead of grieving- and who could blame her? But it shows how strong she is. An admirable woman."
"Yes," Penryn said with a thoughtful nod. Only a couple months ago it would have shocked him, too. Until the death of her husband, the steward hadn't had such a positive opinion of the Lady. "Your sister seemed to be enjoying herself."
"Very much so. She's always enjoyed this sort of thing." he replied. "I think she's looking for a potential husband. If I'm lucky, she wont be looking for a wife for me!"
"Oh well, there are plenty of prospects, I assure you," the steward replied with with a roll of his eyes. "I think parties such as this are dangerous affairs for widowers such as ourselves. We are suddenly targeted by the mother of every single young girl of a marrigable age in the area."
"Indeed." Ishek remarked. "I've seen a few of them eying me. It's a bit disturbing, actually, when they attempt to introduce their young daughter to me- when she's twelve or thirteen Turns younger, it's a bit disturbing." he admitted honestly. "But it would be bad form to hide from them, wouldn't it?"
"Yes, well, at least I have the perfect excuse not to dance." He pointed down at his knee. "Bad leg, you know."
"you're lucky." Ishek joked. "Not on the leg, of course, but on the fact that you can gracefully bow out of things."
"Yes. Perhaps you should look into it," Penryn smiled.
"Maybe I should break my leg or an arm." Ishek joked. His look turned more serious and he regarded the party again. "It's good to see so many people here looking so happy. I know some of them are from the Smith and Miner Halls, but even so there are a lot of people. I wasn't aware there were so many..." He paused. "I wish the other Lords and the Weyrleaders could have been here, though, I would have liked to meet them."
"Well, sir, if you wish to invite them for a special dinner, may I suggest enlisting Lady Thalia's help in the planning. She seems to excel at party planning." And Penryn was sure it would give her confidence a boost. "Do you think that a special dinner would be a good way to meet them, then?" Ishek asked curiously. "Nothing as extravagant as this, maybe?" And there he gestured around. "But still formal?"
"Well, Lady Thalia could probably advise you better on formalities and pleasantries, sir, but I would think so."
Ishek nodded. "Well thank you for that idea." he replied. "Do you like events such as this?" he suddenly queried, an idea beginning to form in his mind.
Penryn shrugged. "I suppose so. It's nice to have something to look forward to."
Ishek nodded thoughtfully. "I'll have to think about that." he remarked.
"What are your plans for the rest of the night? Stay until it's over, or gracefully retire when you think you can be missed?"
The steward chuckled. "And leave you to face the crowds alone? I'll be here as long as you are."
"That's appreciated." Ishek said with a smile. "I'll likely see you again during the night, I suppose." He spied another of the mothers coming- he thought- in his direction. "Err, is she coming over here?" he asked, discreetly pointing.
"Yes, sir," Penryn chuckled. "Shall I head her off and allow you to escape?"
"Would you mind?" he asked. "I'd hate to impose, but I see the Hallmaster over there and I rather need to have a talk with him, and intervention would be nice..."
"I live to serve you, m'Lord." Penryn raised his glass to Lord Ishek with a know smile before walking off to catch the mother honing in on the Lord Regent with her single daughter in tow.
"Thank you so much." Ishek said. "I'll speak with you later." he added as he hurried away, flashing Penryn a grateful smile.
