Barenziah

Barenziah was still smiling from ear to ear as she left from her
conversation with Royan. For the past couple of Turns Barenziah had
put all of her time and effort into her lady-in-waiting training and
it had finaly paid off. With Royan hoping to see his daughter,
Faldrimme, married to a holder at some point, Barenziah was to become
her lady-in-waiting and accompany the young woman on trips. Barenziah
looked at the situation as a great opportunity to travel and see
different places, even if at twenty-eight she was considered an "old
maid."

"Mom, Dad?" She called as she pushed the door open, her blue eyes
searching for signs of her parents.

"In here!" They called.

Moving to the small sitting room attached to the Master Beastcrafter's
quarters, Barenziah's smile became fullblown again as she found her
parents sitting, a cake on the table and a beautiful boquet of flowers
present. "You guys." She rolled her eyes as she came in.

Maylia came forward, wrapping her arms around her daughter and
pressing a light kiss to her cheek, "Your father told me all about
your new position. Congratulations, love, I know you will do a great
job. Miss Faldrimme is lucky to have you."

Barenziah's lips curved into a smile as she returned her mother's hug.
Over Maylia's shoulder she could see her father smiling proudly, "You
did this Dad." She told him.

Bathemue stroked his goatee and lifted his shoulders in a casual
shrug, "I may have mentioned you to Royan when he said that he was
looking for an escort to go with his daughter as she traveled."

Leaving her mother, Barenziah wrapped her arms around her father's
neck, "Thank you, Dad. You're not disappointed that I am not the one
looking for a husband?"

"I gave up on that a long time ago," Bathemue said drily, although his
smile was still intact, "I believe you are too wild to be tamed, but
you will be a great companion for Faldrimme."

"That's right, what other ladies are you going to find that can wield
a belt knife as good as I can?" Barenziah teased, although there was
truth to the statement. Her guard of a brother had taught her a lot of
things that most proper ladies had not been learning when they were in
etiquette training.

"We got you something, to celebrate and so that you can keep in touch
with dear ole mom and dad while you are off having adventures."
Bathemue motioned to an egg sitting nestled in a pot of sand by the
hearth.

Barenziah's eyes widened, "Dad you didn't! A firelizard!" Her voice
was breathless as she moved to the hearth to inspect the egg.

"You got lucky this time. I was talking with another Mastercrafter and
he said that he had one egg left, should be clutching any time now,
today or tomorrow." Bathemue crossed his arms over his chest,
obviously very pleased with himself and his gift to his daughter.

Maylia smiled as she came up behind her husband and put her hands on
his shoulders, "You will write us often, yes?"

Barenziah turned and looked back at her parents, "I promise!"

True to her father's word, Barenziah was sitting by the fire that
evening when the egg began to rattle and shake. With avid interest
Barenziah watched the egg, her fingers scrambling for the bowl of
dried meat that her father had left with her when he went to bed with
her mother. A deep crack zigzagged down across the egg, and with a
final push the shell broke away, reveal a dark, honey gold firelizard.

Barenziah's eyes widened at the color of the firelizard and she gave a
happy little squeal as she scooped the little queen out of the pot of
sand and dropped a small piece of meat into the creature's open jaws.
As she watched the firelizard eat Barenziah knew that it was love at
first sight. Already she was attached to the gorgeous, delicate
features of the queen's headknob and eyeridges.

"I will call you Chiffon." Barenziah declared.

Chiffon burped in response.
