Growling, he almost stalked to the Captain's door. This was completely
distasteful. Poor Tourniquet was zooming around, clearly agitated.
Chupsin's eyes flashed. "Karhal, are you in there?"
The office was empty, but the sound of booted footsteps sounded down the
hall as Karhal returned from one of his rounds. Seeing Chupsin and
hearing the agitation, Karhal answered. "No. I'm not in my office." The voice was dry. "What
can I help you with, Chupsin?"
"I'm missing some things. Some..troubling things." A very fastidious healer
was genuinely angry at the audacity of whoever had intruded upon his
demesne. He was also bothered because his chambers were off of the Infirmary. If they had
done it while he was sleeping...**No no, it must have been when I wasn't there.** And that
left the safety of charges who might have been sleeping in the ward up for inspection. There was
also a nurse or someone on duty but..
**Shards, him too?** Karhal's brows snapped immediately downward. "Step into
my office, please." He gestured the healer inside and shut the door
firmly behind him. "What manner of things?"
Chupsin didn't sit, preferring to stay on his feet in his current state of
emotion. "Some of the herbs that I keep back. If not used in the
proper medicinal fashion, they could be
very toxic." The concerned look on his face did not waver. "If whoever
doesn't know what they're doing..or even if they do..."
Karhal went absolutely still and stared at Chupsin. He spoke slowly. "When
did these items turn up missing, Chupsin?" He moved quickly to his desk and
pulled out a hide that already had various notes upon it.
"I do a check everyday at the end of first shift. I just did it."
Other than that, he couldn't really say. "So between yesterday and today, though no one but
my junior journeyman was into that particular store when I was there."
Karhal looked down at his notes and hid a grimace. More and more
people were noticing things going amiss, but no one knew who or why.
But this latest development...toxic herbs...His brow snapped down. "I
do not know if you have heard, Chupsin, but there have been a rash of
items disappearing from different people in the Hold. Minor things
really, but this..." He shook his head. "How much was missing?"
"No I hadn't heard." And that was also troublesome. Did no one think
to tell him? He would have put Tourniquet in the fardling cabinet or locked
it. "Probably enough to fill a finger sack of each." Eyes focused on Karhal.
Clearly he didn't feel protected if things like this were allowed to happen.
"It has been kept quiet." Karhal's lips thinned. "The thefts were minor, not
of this nature." He jotted down notes, scrubbed a hand through his hair and
took a breath. "Lock up your cabinets. I'll have a search done and inform
Lord Zathris. This is more troubling than I care for."
"You and me both." He frowned, then turned to go. "Next time, though, please
tell me when something happens." Mainly because Chupsin saw more people of
the Hold than anyone else. And even though he wasn't a mindhealer, he had
the training to spot things.
"I'm not at liberty to tell you everything, Chupsin. Some matters are
internal. This theft may not even be connected to the others, but it still
needs investigating."
"Define internal." In his mind, he was just as much a part of this Hold as
Karhal was. Maybe even moreso. If he wasn't here keeping people alive,
there would be no Hold.
"As in privately discussed between two parties." Karhal's voice was firm.
"The matter of the thefts were not of import to a healer and the less people
who know of a delicate investigation, the better."
**He doesn't trust me.** Chupsin almost laughed. "Here's a thought Karhal.
I deal more in confidentiality than you ever will. And if you don't trust me
with this, can you trust me to sew your arm back on when the time comes?" And
with that, the healer turned to go. Tourniquet followed, clearly agitated.
"Not everything is about you, Chupsin." Karhal responded calmly. "I've no
doubt that you know how to do your job and I know mine. I don't tell you how
to do yours, don't critique mine." He let the Healer go, annoyed with the
healer, but more concerned with the development of the thefts.
**But if you had told me, this probably would not have ever happened. So if
someone gets hurt, it's on you, Captain.** Smug in his superiority, he left.
Still, he was angry that someone had decided to violate his space.
