J'darin

He massaged his temples as he sat at his desk going over the latest
reports on their current weyrlings.

He still got tired easily, but for the most part, had returned to
normal function and normal behavior.

His staff had performed well in his intermittent absences over the
last few months, and he was, as always, thankful for them.

As his health - and his mother's - improved, he had begun to pay more
attention to the Weyr around him and he had discovered that he had
missed Devyn's last Flight. He had been seeing his mother, he was
sure, on that day.

It was aggravating to have discovered that, and even more annoying to
realize he had barely seen her in months. When he was sick, the
Healers had banned anyone from his presence who hadn't had the same
sickness as he had, and that had meant he had only Hasaarth and Oak
for company, and one helpful weyrling staff assistant to talk to, in
all that time.

He had known Devyn had wanted to see him. Oak had carried a few
messages between them, but then he had stopped even those for fear his
notes would carry his sickness to her.

But he was well enough now and had not been contagious for a couple of sevendays at least.

}:Then why do you not go see her?:{ Hasaarth butted into his thoughts.

**Why indeed?** He sighed in response.

Admit it, J'darin. You're scared to death. You've given her plenty
of reason to dump you on your bronzeriding arse. Why would she want
you around at all?

Screwing up his courage took a little more time still, but when he had
done it, he finally wrote one of his first notes to her in weeks. He
tied it to Oak's leg and sent it off, not wishing to have Hasaarth
bother Ellyth.

The note said:

"May I please see you tonight?"

Nothing else. Apologies, he had learned, were best handled in person.
If you could get in person with the person you had upset...

This was not the first time something like this had happened. Already
once before in their tenuous relationship J'darin had found himself
"too busy", or whatever the excuse was, to see her. He had passed the
message through Hasaarth that time, however, asking meekly if he could
come by. Devyn stared woodenly at the note in her hand. She could not
describe the whirl of emotions that were taking place behind the
carefully concealed mask of a smile that she wore on her face.

"Trouble?" Her friend asked.

"I am not sure." Devyn responded, pushing her plate away. The
greenrider felt torn. A part of her wanted to tell J'darin "no" so he
could get a sense of how _she_ had felt over the past couple of
months. And then still there was the other part of her that missed the
bronzerider so much that she _wanted_ to see him.

"Do you have something to write with?" She asked of her friend.

Devyn wrote only two letters as her reply, "O.K." And sent it back with Oak.

When the reply came, it was about what he expected. And deserved.
How in the world did she even still want him around? And what kind
of idiot doesn't pay any attention to his amazing, beautiful
too-good-for-him lover?

It was about two candlemarks later when he showed up at her door,
knocking. He had taken Hasaarth /between/ to find some flowers in
the part of the South that was warm all the time, a spot he knew near
Dolphin Cove. And while he didn't think that would make much
difference, you didn't show up to humbly beg forgiveness with nothing
in your hands. You ALSO didn't show up with material things that
could be purchased.

He was dressed casually, but you could tell he had tried to comb his
hair and look halfway presentable. Though, it was unusual for him to
look anything less than presentable.

He expected to be dumped, and would probably try to talk her into
leaving him, but he did not want to leave _her_. He loved her. He
had missed her, but it was also easy for him to be swallowed up by
duty. Duty generally came first, though Devyn was just as important
to him.

His devotion to duty was what made him low in the friend department
and also made women leave him. usually. This time seemed no
different.

He waited outside her door, trying not to fidget.

Devyn had changed clothes, putting on something a little more
fetching, and then she had dabbed some perfume on her neck. After all,
she wanted J'darin to see what he had been missing all this time.
Going to the door, she pulled it open, a cool, measured expression on
her face, "J'darin," she stepped back, "come in."

Well, that was about right. He hadn't expected alot of excitement
but the cool, almost detached way she was looking at him made him
quail inside. He almost left. Almost. She had lots of other
options besides a former drink too much, grouncy, duty devoted
bronzerider. Why put them through a painful 'reunion' if she didn't
want him anymore?

But she looked so good to his eyes. He had been starving for her,
really, and its not as if it was easy to stay away from her. In his
mind, he had no choice. And he couldn't go dragging her away from
her own responsibilities all the time to help with his own.

He didn't move right away. Instead, he looked at her, letting his
emotions show on his face. How he'd missed her... how much he cared
for her. How _good_ it was to see her face, so close. Even if he
could feel the cool distance between them, still she was right here.
Close.

Most of his confidence melted away in her presence. "Hi. thanks for
seeing me... ." He lost track of what he meant to be saying then,
hesitating one moment before crossing into her weyr. A bit lamely,
he held out the flowers to her as he finally stepped inside. "We
went and picked these for you, Hasaarth and I. Devyn... " Did you
say sorry? Did you say ..what?

Not knowing what else to say, he added quietly, "I'm sorry. I know it
isn't ... " Its possible he'd never tripped over himself quite so much
as he was doing tonight. Even with other greenriders. "..there is so much
more to say. But how about ... I'm so sorry I haven't been around.
I missed you. So much."
