"Hallsecond," Uegot greeted, stepping into the older man's office.
"Uegot, good to see you. Have a seat." Kaphrad smiled. They'd met
before, but this was a more formal meeting.
"Thank you," Uegot said and took the indicated chair. It creaked under
his weight.
"How is your family doing? Did you have any difficulty with the move?"
Kaphrad asked.
"They're doing fine. There's always a little bit of restlessness when
you're adjusting to a new place," Uegot replied.
"We should get our families together, for a picnic or something like
that," the Hallsecond suggested. They had a few children around the
same age.
"That?s a good idea," Uegot agreed. It wouldn't hurt for the children
to make new friends. Hopefully they would be living here for a many
Turns.
"Wonderful." Kaphrad smiled and glanced at the hide on his desk. "So,
you're going to be teaching here. Unfortunately, it will be a little
while yet before we have apprentices." The construction was going
well, but these things took time.
"I've noticed," Uegot said dryly. "So, what should I do meanwhile?"
"You can help me work on class schedules. That's one thing we can have
set in place when apprentices start arriving." Kaphrad wished the Hall
was ready to go, but on the bright side they could structure things
the way they wanted from the beginning. "You can also make a list of
the supplies you'll need for your classes and give them priority
levels."
"All right, can do. Anything else?" Uegot replied. "Can hold a hammer
as the next man and carry more than most."
He was volunteering to help with construction.
"The Hold's men are supposed to handle construction, but you're not
the only one that wants to help. I'll speak with the Hallmaster and
see if some of us can help out without stepping on Lord Morin's toes."
Kaphrad felt a bit idle, waiting around for things to get done.
Uegot nodded. "I'm going to drive wife crazy if I just sit around
home," he said with humour.
Kaphrad chuckled. "I'm sure. She's a crafter, isn't she?"
"Yes, a technician," Uegot answered.
Kaphrad rubbed his chin. "I wonder if we'll be able to use her skills."
"It's worth considering. Ask her," Uegot was proud of his wife and her
skills.
"I would very much like to, but I'd have to convince the Hallmaster
first." That could be tricky.
"It would be loss not to use her skills," Uegot said.
"I'll try to emphasize that it will be a benefit to the Hall to have
someone with her skills working for us." Kaphrad wished there wasn't
so much resistance to female crafters.
Uegot just nodded, understanding his dilemma. He had always been fine
with female crafters, due to his family's close ties to a Weyr.
"Ah, well. We'll see how it goes. If Hallmaster Relik says no, I'll
wait awhile and ask him again." Kaphrad winked.
"Nagging always works," Uegot said with straight face.
The Hallsecond chuckled. "You make me sound like an old auntie."
Uegot just grinned impishly.
