They didn't have a healer on site yet and it wasn't enough to merit going to the Hold. Relik cursed under his breath.
He'd not been paying attention like he should have. Grunting and swearing, he made his way towards the structure they were using for living and working right now, holding his hand.
"Relik?" Aini paused in her step. She'd been going in the opposite direction, but stopped when she saw the odd way the Hallmaster was holding his hand. Of course, the noises he was making had also caught her attention, they were rather hard to ignore.
"Aye?" He stopped what he was doing, being in the presence of a
woman. "Oh Aini... sorry I well..had a bit of a mishap." And then it was
clear he was bleeding.
Aini clicked her tongue. She tucked her work beneath her arm. "Let me
take a look." She stated as she gently reached for the bleeding hand.
He didn't extend it at first, but then he finally did, knowing they didn't have
a healer on premises to take care of it just yet. Inconvenience it was.
"It looks worse than it is." Aini turned the hand over, but her touch
was gentle. "Come, I have a first aid kit in my office. I can bandage
it for you." She was no healer, but she had some basic skills.
"All right fine." He followed her, noticing how Aini walked. He knew his
headwoman was useful. If she wasn't, he never would have hired her.
Still, something in Relik was curious to see how Aini handled
herself around blood.
She led the way in silence, though she did nod to the familiar faces of
those who were shuffling about on various errands. She didn't stop
until they came to the door that was marked as her office. She opened
it and led Relik inside, then indicated that he should sit while
she moved to a tall storage unit. She pulled out the bottom drawer and
from within took a box, then set it on her desk. "And how did you go
about getting that wound?"
"Well...I might have been helping to shovel something. Can't let my muscles
go to fat you know. And we need all the hands we can get to get this place
ship shape." Even if he didn't know much about manual labor on land, Relik
was no stranger to it in the past. Recently, however, the Master had
gotten away from most of that.
"Mmm. Looks like you may have overdone it. That isn't good either.
We need _you_ ship shape." The Headwoman reminded him. From the box
she pulled a couple of cloths. "Here, use this and apply pressure.
Once the bleeding stops, we can clean it and bandage it."
He followed her instructions and admittedly was impressed with the way
she handled herself. "Aini, you know when the womenfolk get here you'll
have help right?" It was something he had been thinking about. She was
doing so much right now with so little.
"I know. I have some help already, thanks to the Hold's Headwoman."
Aini managed a small smile. She gently guided Relik's hand away to
look at the bleeding. "That's good. Just a moment more." While he put
pressure back on it, she began to dampen a cloth with some redwort.
"This is going to sting but it will help keep away infection."
"Do what you will," he told her, bracing himself for what he knew was
coming. It reminded him of the time he'd gotten stung by a stupid packtail.
Horrid fish, those were. See if he ever tried to clean any of them
ever again on his own.
Aini's touch was gentle, even if the solution itself wasn't. She
carefully cleaned the wound, then picked up a bandage to wrap it. "You
should be more careful. She chided him again." There now. It's secure
as long as you don't overdo it. Again."
"I just need to get back into shape. And all of this work is just
the thing. I will try to be a bit more careful, though. You get in a hurry
and make mistakes." That last statement was said with a bit of thought.
"So how are you getting along with the Hold's Headwoman?"
"Fine, actually. She's very nice and accommodating. I don't want to
take advantage, of course, but at least I don't have to worry about not
getting the necessities." Aini had found that to be a relief. She had
been afraid she might have to pull teeth just to get anything. She was
grateful that the Hold was so willing to help.
"Good. Very good. Right now we're just sort of subsisting I know but
next month is going to mean a lot of changes. Do you think we'll be prepared
for that?" His tone was full of concern. He needed to know if Aini had
enough help.
"I think we'll be all right." Aini assured him. She placed the unused
items back into the box then closed the lid. "I have more people
coming, including an assistant Headwoman who will be here in two
sevendays, so that will help as well. Some people I knew took up my offer."
"That's good then. Keep me updated." With that, he looked down and decided
he would just go and supervise the rest of the day. "Thank you."
