Peilent picked up another stack of the dishes they'd just washed and took them out to set on the table next to the food while the line of Weyrfolk filed past it to serve themselves. "There's still a line out there so we need more," he said to the other candidate working the
kitchen with him.
"Ya got it," Aluka replied, and set a dish on a pile that was already a foot tall. "Hey, get me another towel, will ya?" he called to another Candidate passing by. "This one's just 'bout too wet to use any more."
"Okay, I will in a minute," was the reply.
The redhead squeezed out some of the water from the towel's corner and polished up another plate. That seemed to work for the time being, so he did it again and kept wiping. When Peilent came back, his fellow Candidate was using a fresh towel and humming something as he worked. "How's it look out there now?"Aluka interrupted himself to ask.
"They're still coming," Pelient answered as he scooped up the clean stack to go back out to the table and repeat his actions all over again. "Won't it be nice when we don't have eternal dishes?"
"Sweet Ancients, YES," Aluka responded emphatically, rolling his eyes. "It'll be downright blissful. I swear, any more of this and I'm gonna lose all the callouses on my fingers." Somewhat of an exaggeration, yes, but he would really rather be able to continue playing his gitar without the aid of picks. The strumming just didn't sound right when picks were used. To his ears, anyway. "Well, 'least we're not cleanin' weyrs and scrubbin' floors right now."
"Yeah," he said and delivered the plates out to the buffet. When he came back he smiled at his redheaded friend. "Have you had a chance to ride up to the top with one of the weyrlings on elevator duty?"
For once, mention of a chore made the tall redhead smile. "Aye," he answered. "Three times." He still couldn't believe how it felt to fly, even if it only lasted for a few moments. No wonder so many songs had "If I had wings, and I could fly," as a refrain. Somehow, he seemed to have gotten the prettiest greens as rides, too. Maybe it was stupid, but the rides had made him smile even though he had been cleaning. "How 'bout ya?"
"Oh yeah," he said with a waggle of eyebrows. "There's sometimes a little benefit to being lifted to a high weyr, if you know what I mean."
The other boy paused, mind momentarily stuttering. "No way," he said incredulously, and looked around to make sure they were pretty much ignored before leaning forward. "Seriously? Ya messin' with me?"
"Nope," he grinned then winked at the other candidate. "Not messin' with ya. The Weyrfolk are freer in their ways then the holds and you can find someone willin' to be playful. Just be sure to take no for an answer, or you'll be out on yer ear quicker 'en a darter."
"What are you two whispering about over there," came a yell from the cook. "Back to work!"
Pelient just waggled his eyebrows and whistled as he walked away to grab a fresh tray of meat rolls for the buffet table.
Aluka straightened and resumed drying the dishes, still too surprised to be indignant over the fact Peilent seemed to think he had to be told no meant no, no matter which gender said it. So people weren't worried about about being with someone who ranked them? It was an intriguing thought. One that set off his vivid imagination and also made the time pass quite nicely.
This time when he came back into the kitchen he was carrying two pitchers for refills. "This one's for citron juice, and this for water," he explained to another drudge as he handed them off. Then he went back over to Aluka. "Wanna go hunt up some fun when we're done
here?"
It took a minute for the meaning to sink in, but the other Candidate gave Peilent a particularly fangy grin when he caught on. "Aye," he said, and the single word was very enthusiastic. "Just lead the way."
