Jykri's stomach vibrated with nervousness as the dragons hummed.
Walking onto the Sands with the other Candidates, he looked at the
tiny clutch. Was his dragon in there? He looked over at Daret, and
while he smiled encouragingly at his friend, Jykri got even more
nervous. Would Daret Impress? Or would his best friend leave him?

Paetri caught his eye and he smiled at her too. If she didn't Impress
this time, she had other chances. Oh, but he hoped she would! He hoped
all three of them would walk off the Sands with lifemates today. Blues
and greens, the clutch was sure to have a few of each. They had a
chance.

The eggs started to rock and his heart pounded. The humming reached a
higher pitch. **I want one to choose me. Please choose me.** But,
Daret ... **Let it be green and let it pick him.**

A blue foreleg pushed out of the first egg, and then the rest of the
hatchling emerged. He wobbled a bit, unsteady on his legs, but there
was no hesitation. }:I'm coming.:{

**What?** Jykri blinked, wondering if he was imagining things. It had
sounded so clear in the noise of the hatching grounds.

The little blue came straight toward him, whirling rainbow eyes fixed
on his face. }:Hmm, yes. You're the one..:{ The hatchling plopped
himself down at Jykri's feet.

**Are you ... mine?**

}:I am Rademerth and you are mine.:{

The rush of emotion that followed the dragonet's statement made
Jykri's knees go weak. He knelt with tears spilling from his eyes.
Love, so much love, and a presence filling his mind that was like
nothing he'd imagined. **Rademerth, Rademerth. I love you, too.**
Shouts from the crowd, from his fellow Candidates, it all washed over
him.

}:Mine, I am hungry. Very, very, very hungry!:{

**Oh, yes.** They'd explained in class that the hatchlings would need
to eat right away. "Come on." He led Rademerth away. There was
something bothering Jykri, though. Something ...

He glanced behind him, at the other Candidates. Daret was still
standing there. **Please, oh please let him Impress.**

}:Mine! Hungry!:{ Rademerth butted against his leg.

"Oh, sorry. Yes, I'm bringing you to the food." Jykri -- no, J'kri--
left the Hatching Grounds with his wonderful, perfect blue. Just
before he stepped outside, he cast one last glance back at Daret.

**Please, please.**
