Clutch may be small but there's still a chance

Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 18 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Paetri

Word traveled fast about the small clutch and Daret was trying not to
get even more depressed than he was. A smaller clutch meant a smaller
chance of Impressing ...

Turning into the candidate barracks, he spotted Jykri and motioned for
him to meet at his cot. It was quiet in the barracks, having come
directly from the evening meal when candidates were wont to enjoy
their time out. "Can you believe how small the clutch is? Makes me
nervous ..." he said as he sat down and pulled his legs up to his
chest.

"Me, too. But _some_ of us will Impress. And we have a much better
chance than the boys who'd get bronze or brown." There might not be a
single bronze ... or even a brown.

Daret shrugged lightly. "I suppose," he said then leaned over to rest
his head on Jykri's shoulder. "I don't know if I can handle another
failed Impression. I'm not even sure Da will come to this one."

"Why wouldn't he come?" Jykri wrapped an arm around him.

Snuggling closer, he slipped his arm around Jykri's back and sighed.
"I didn't tell you ... we had a fight the last time I went there and
he," Daret swallowed and whispered, "He said he wouldn't until I
settled down. Da was never like that and I was so angry ... What if
he doesn't come? Does your Da come?"

"Of course. The whole family comes." Even though he'd been
disappointed last time, he'd been thrilled to spend time with his
sisters. "My da doesn't quite understand me, but he'd be very proud to
have a dragonrider in the family."

That's what he remembered and it only made him sigh again. "Ah, well
I'm happy for you. If I don't Impress this time, I'm leaving," he
said as he gripped his best friend tighter. 'Especially if you
Impress', he thought to himself.

"_Leaving_? Where will you go?" The thought of Daret going away made
his heart squeeze.

He'd been thinking about this for a while but he still hadn't figured
out where he'd go. "I don't know," he said and looked up at Jykri.
"Somewhere, I'll be fine. It won't matter anyway, right? We'll both
Impress ... right?"

Jykri turned and gripped Daret's hand. "Please stay here. You'd be
miserable anywhere else."

Seeing how hard Jykri was taking the thought of him leaving moved
Daret more than he could say. He brought his friend's hand to his
lips and kissed the palm, eyes locked to the other. "I can't promise
but I won't leave without saying goodbye. I couldn't do that to you,"
he said with his lips against the sensitive skin.

"Don't talk about leaving. You'll Impress. We'll both Impress." The
odds were against them, against all the Candidates, but that didn't
make it impossible. Seventeen boys and girls would still walk off the
Sands with a dragon. "We have to." He trailed his free hand along
Daret's jawline and left it there, cupping his cheek.

Daret smiled softly and leaned forward to rest his forehead against
Jykri's. "You're right ... we'll Impress," he whispered before kissing
him softly.

Jykri deepened the kiss a bit before pulling back to speak. "You know,
if we do ... _when_ we do, we'll have to give this up for a while." He
slid a hand along Daret's leg.

Groaning when the boy pulled away, Daret laid back and pulled Jykri
with him. "Don't remind me ... it's why I haven't Impressed yet, you
know," he said as he draped the leg that was touched over Jykri's
thighs. "I'm willing to though if I can get my girl. Until then ...
"

Jykri leaned down to give him another kiss, his body heating. "Flight
room?" he asked as he moved to kiss along Daret's neck.

"Hmm? Do we have to ..." Daret asked as he tilted his head then saw a
candidate pass out of the corner of his eye. He giggled then and
started to sit up. "Oh ... yea, guess we should. Quickly ..."

Taking his hand, Jykri led Daret to one of the flight rooms. It was a
bit of a walk, but it was so much nicer than sneaking into a storage
room. "Once we're riders, we'll get our own weyrs. We can spend the
whole night together." Jykri slid Daret's shirt off and backed him
toward the bed.

The thought of that had Daret smiling as he wriggled out of his pants
and reached for Jykri's shirt. "Mine more than yours, I'm thinking,"
he mumbled before kissing the bare chest before him. There was a
possibility that Paetri would be in Jykri's weyr which could make
things incredibly uncomfortable. Pushing the thought aside, he pulled
Jykri close as they tumbled onto the bed.

"We can switch off." Jykri laughed, realizing that could have a double
meaning. He pressed their bodies together, enjoying the feeling of
Daret's warm skin against his own.

Grinning at the double meaning, Daret sighed and let his body to do the
talking.

*Fade ...*
