"Do you know any men in the Hold that are young and eligible?" she asked casually as Parys
continued to nurse. Parale was hoping she might arrange something for Danrina without doing
much work. All she needed were a few men to invite to dinner.
Ioven lowered his book thoughtfully. He knew lots of men in the Hold who were young, and many
eligible, but the description was rather vague. "How young?"
"I'd say thirty turns or under," Parale guessed.
"Excluding apprentices I presume?" Just what was on his wife's mind, he wondered.
"Oh aye. At least twenty turns so we're talking journeymen for the most part. Someone who
could support a family." Parale was trying to go through the ones in her mind that she knew
of.
"Planning a match for Parys already?" he asked, since she was not volunteering any more
information as to the reasons behind this line of questioning.
"No..." She came in from where she was changing the baby and plopped down next to him slowly
with Parys in her arms. "Sweet little darling, you have a very long time before that." Turning
her head to her husband, she just came out with it. "I met a young woman, Danrina, who has come here
to find herself a husband. She has a turn to manage it before she goes back and marries a fellow
her father has chosen. So I offered to assist her. We can have her and some suitors to dinner a few
times I think to make introductions. And I think she might...be related to Blood somehow so it'd be
a good friend to make."
"Well, I don't know how many young eligible men I know are high enough born for _that_." He was
only a journeyman craftsman for Faranth's sake!? "What do you mean she _might_ be related to the
Blood?? Where are you getting that from?"
"Not major Hold or I'd know who she was. No, it's probably minor..but that's still a good connection.
And she didn't come right out and say it but the way she described her father and the situation, that's
what it seemed like. And she's going to be happy for anyone other than the man chosen apparently. The
choice made was patently unsuitable so she's quite open minded." It was hard describing that sense of
upbringing that Parale had gotten just from watching Danrina without letting Ioven see for himself.
"She might be the youngest in a long line of daughters - with all other possibilities exhausted?"
The distinct lack of real knowledge that Parale seemed to have about this girl really made Ioven wonder.
She was quickly taken in by the young woman, and who truly knew what she was about? This girl could
have some plot or scheme in mind for these men. At the very least, she had stubbornly refused the
council of her father and decided to take matters into her own hands, leaving family and friends behind to
marry beneath herself. And whose to say she was wrong to do so with so little information to go on, but
he wanted to be sure before he just trusted his wife's first impressions of the girl. She had not always
proved herself to be a good judge of character. After all, she was still friends with that woman Briata
who had scandalously left her husband, the Lord Warder of Garnet Valley, for a life at the Weyr of all
things.
"I would like to meet this girl before I even hazard a guess as to who might be suitable for her." And
that way he could form his own opinion of her.
"Very well...maybe I can tell her I have something for her and get her to come by. Do we have
anything I can give away that's no longer useful?" She hated to say it like that, but it might be
something Danrina needed perhaps.
"I wouldn't know what a young single woman looking for a husband might need except a man," he
said with a helpless shrug. "Wouldn't it just be easier to say that your husband would
like to meet her once before trying to set her up with his friends?"
"I suppose." With the way Parale's mind worked, she worried that Danrina might take it badly-thinking
they wanted to inspect her before they introduced her to their friends as if she wasn't good enough. Still,
it made sense and she had been meaning to invite the young woman over anyway. "Oh allright, but maybe I
can find something to give her anyway...surely we have something I've been meaning to do away with..."
Quietly thinking, she looked down at the baby in her arms, noting the subtle changes time had wrought
already.
Ioven shrugged again. If it was so important that she find something to give the girl, let her try to think of
something. In his opinion, finding her a husband was enough gift on its own. "I'm sure you'll find
something," he said, picking up his book once more.
