Vorbojes hesitated as he left work. He didn't want to go home and that
scared him. How could it be that he didn't want to go home to his
beautiful wife and children? This wasn't the kind of life he had
thought they would have. But if he was going to avoid having another
fight at home, maybe he should go and blow off some steam first. With
this thought in mind he ended up on his brother's doorstep.
Sebol answered the door, a little sleepily, but brightened a bit when
he saw who it was. Gesturing the man through to a comfy seat, he
offered a wineskin with a waved hand. "You look down. What's going on?"
Vorbojes followed his brother in and flopped down on the empty chair,
exhausted in mind and spirit. "I just.. I didn't feel like going home
just yet, is all," he shrugged.
Sebol, busy fixing the drinks, hesitated a moment. "Your wife, again?"
His brother had mentioned some of his problems before.
"She's being impossible, Sebs," Vorbojes sighed. "I work myself into
oblivion for her and the kids, and every night I come home..." he
trailed of, looking miserable.
His wince was sympathetic. "You take too much, my dear man. She
rides over you. It's not right."
"I know," Vorbojes sighed deeply. "But no matter what I say about it,
it never ends. What's a guy to do with that? I thought marriage was
about respect, but this..."
"You make your respect too, Vor," he said it, but in a way that wasn't
accusatory. "Can't just ask it to be given it and hope. Got to show some
steel sometimes."
"What are you suggesting I'd do?" Vorbojes asked cautiously. He had
tried standing up to her, but she just waltzed right over him.
"Oh, just actually *stand up* to her for once. You're too sweet half
the time, Vor. No one's gonna take you seriously unless you start
giving 'em reason too."
"I guess I really should," Vorbojes said with a sigh. "I had just
never thought I would have to be like that with Daizimi. I thought we
really understood each other, you know? That I could be myself with her."
"Well, that hasn't really worked out so far, has it?" he said sternly, then
relented. "I'm not saying come over the beast, Vor. But your idea of reasoned
debate has got you nowhere, and look at you- worn to the bone and
avoiding your own home. You need to be firmer. Be the man of the house
you are."
Vorbojes nodded slowly, his expression growing a little more
determined. "You're right. I'm going to make her listen."
Privately, Sebol rather thought that determination would last as
far as the door, but he nodded encouragement anyway. "It's your rightful
place, Vor."
"It is," Vorbojes nodded, before draining his glass. "I should
probably be heading back."
"Aye. And I suppose I've tasks enough to occupy me, too. Take care, brother."
