Parme smiled gently at the mewing pile of kittens in a comfortably
warm corner of her workplace. While it was becoming more and more
difficult to find Willow's litters a good home, Parme had to admit the
little critters warmed her heart. They were growing up so fast,
though, and now they were on solid food they were getting more and
more expensive as time went on. Parme had put word out she was giving
away kittens again, but so far only one had found a new home. She had
asked Elson to ask his friends, though, so hopefully they would have
more luck soon.
Young Kelren knocked on her door, figuring this to be the right place
by the sound of kitten's mewing. His fingers twitched at the thought
of something new and cute and all his!
At the knock at the door, Parme quickly got to her feet to open it.
When she saw the youngster, she smiled at him pleasantly. "Hello
there, how may I help you?" she asked, figuring the boy was probably
one of Elson's classmates wanting to speak to him about something.
"Uh..." Kelren always felt awkward around grown people. "Uh..ma'am,
your son said you had kittens?" He could hear the mewing and he
fidged, wanting to pet them.
"Oh, that's right." Parme said as she stepped back to invite the kid
into her workplace. "Would you like to come and have a look at them?"
"Can I?" He all but ran her over to see the kittens. Secretly in his
mind he was desperate to become a beast crafter but his da needed him
working in the fields. He would have sighed at the unfairness of this
but it was then that he saw the kittens. "Ohhh! Look at them!"
Parme grinned at the kid's excitement, squatting down to pick up the
liveliest young thing in the bunch. "You can hold him, if you want
to." Parme said with a smile as she beckoned the kid over. The
cream-coloured kitten mewed softly and pawed at her playfully.
"Can I?" Eagerly he took the kitten from her and began playing with
his soft paws. The tiny feline was perfect in his eyes. He was in
love.
Parme smiled tenderly at the youngster and the kitten. "Are your
parents interested in getting a feline? I do think this little fellow
got the vermin chasing instincts from his mother."
The lad just nodded and held the kitten to his chest, completely
happy. "C-can I have this one?"
"You can, it isn't spoken for yet. Just ask your parents to drop by
and pick him up with you." While Parme welcomed anyone wanting to take
one of the kittens off her hands, she wouldn't let one go with a kid
unsupervised. While the boy seemed trustworthy, you never knew what
would happen once they left the cot.
At that the boy's face fell. "How about an older brother? My parents
are just too busy..."
"How old is your brother?" Parme asked, noticing how the boy's face
dropped and sensing she might be missing out on a good home for the
kitten after all.
"17, ma'am." The boy's voice was full of disappointment and he
glanced longingly at the tiny kitten.
Parme pondered on this for a second. In her opinion a 17 turn old
should be responsible enough in a matter like this, but then you never
knew. "You know what? I can bring him by sometime this sevenday when
one of your parents is around, does that sound like a plan?"
"Okay..." The lad's voice trailed off as he imagined what his mother
would say at the sight of a kitten.
"Good," Parme said gently. "When do you think would be a good moment
for me to come by?"
"A couple of days maybe?" That might give him time to convince his ma
to let him have the kitty. Kelren gave the little one one last pat. "I
should go, my ma's gonna wonder where I am."
"Well, then, you run along," Parme said, looking at the boy with a
soft smile. Such a sweet little brat, he was. "Tell your parents I'll
come by in a couple of days, alright?"
"Okay..." He ran off, a plan already forming in his mind.
