Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 7, day 12 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Corowal
The seacrafter in him couldn't stay away from the water for too long.
The only water around the Hold was the river. So it wasn't strange
that the steward would have close relationships with the riverboat
captains, especially since it meant increased trade for the Hold in
general. Walking down to the river, he neglected his usual fishing
habit as he saw one of the boats at the dock.
Beside the boat, a man was looking over a list of some kind, crossing
off items as he communicated with someone on board. When he folded the
list, apparently done with the check up, he noticed Sarban and raised
a hand in greeting. "Hello there, steward," Jarwon called out in a
friendly greeting.
"Quick waters," Sarban easily responded as he approached the boat.
"What are you guys bringing in today? Anything interesting?" He knew
they had some of the harper hall construction materials on order, but
it might be too soon for that.
"Nothing out of the ordinary today," The captain said with a small
shrug. "Mostly fruits and vegetables. Not what you might have been
hoping for?"
"Well we could use them, but I was hoping some of the materials for
the construction. No matter. Any news?" The riverboaters were an easy
source of news, for certain, and Sarban liked to chat with them.
"There's a small hold down the river that's been having some trouble
with a wild feline," Jarwon said with a more serious look on his face.
"Attacked their livestock a couple of times. I believe they are
interested in a watchwher egg as well. You might be receiving an
official request for aid soon."
"Well shells." He recalled his earlier conversation with Corowal and
planned to mention it to him at dinner. "That's the only thing about
living in the south versus the north-those vicious things."
"I can only agree," the captain said with a serious nod. "The damage
wasn't too serious, though, I think it mostly just rattled them."
"Good, I'll certainly have to check when I get back to the office."
Maybe he'd make a visit soon, come to think of it. He put his hand on
the railing, feeling the wood underneath it. "You guys hit any bad
weather?"
"Some heavy rainfall, nothing too serious, though," Jarwon said with a
shrug. "I'm betting you had a bit of that over here as well,
yesterday?"
"Aye sure, but we needed it so I'm not complaining. The headwoman's
kitchen garden was looking a bit sad." Not a farmer, he understood the
basics, but Sarban didn't get into those types of things too much.
"Ah yes, though I'm sure the farmers will find something else to
complain about," the captain said with a chuckle.
"Probably. They're a funny lot. Of course I will say I'm a
little...superstitious if you could say that but I think everyone who
lives on the water is to a point." Sarban had his own charm that he
carried.
"No harm in taking some precautions," Jarwon nodded seriously. He had
a few rituals of his own to insure safe travel. "Got any news to share
yourself?"
"Not recent. We're looking for settlers though if you see anyone." He
had to resettle some of those old holds.
"What kind of people are you looking for?" Jarwon asked with a
thoughtful look on his face, obviously having someone in mind.
"Well they have to be hardy, able to make a go of it out there. The
ones with big families are better since there's a lot of farming
involved. Loyal-they'd stay and wouldn't go hunting for something
better." He thought that was a pretty good description.
Jarwon nodded. "I've got a boy who's looking for a place to settle
down, no sea-legs on the lad, but he's on his own. If you do know
someone who could use an extra hand on their farm, could you let me
know?"
"Aye sure. I bet I could find a spot easy enough. The next meeting
Corowal has with the minor holders here should bring all that up."
Sarban could definitely use some hard workers.
"Perfect, he will be pleased to hear that. He's really looking forward
to settling down, find himself a lady and start a life, you know,"
Jarwon respected that in his son, even if he would rather have seen
him on a boat like his old man. Then again, as long as he earned an
honest living, Jarwon would be satisfied.
"Oh we've plenty of ladies needing good strong men. Definitely let me
know when he comes in and I'll find him a place." Corowal would be
pleased.
"Perfect," Jarwon said, obviously pleased with that prospect. "I will
have a talk with him somewhere on our next trip down. Speaking of
which, I ought to get unloaded and hurry on."
