Characters: P'nal, Sh'lua
Description: P'nal talks to Sh'lua to see if he might be a good candidate for wingthird.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 4 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: G'nir, S'vin

He'd been thinking. With things as they were, they needed a good Wingthird.
The
bluerider was a good rider, despite being a sort of recent addition to the
wing. Maybe
they needed a fresh pair of eyes. Intending to scope things out for G'nir,
P'nal called
him into his office to talk.

"Hi, P'nal! You wanted to see me?" the bluerider strode in with an
easygoing, friendly
smile.

"Aye, have a seat." He put his quill back into the jar on his desk for the
time being. "So
how is everything going?"

"Just fine and dandy," Sh'lua replied and parked his mass to the chair.

"Glad to see you fitting in. How long has it been since you entered the
fighting wings,
bluerider?" His intention was to gather information. If the man didn't pass
this researching
attempt, then he wouldn't go further as a possibility.

"Umh, how old I am? Since I was sixteen..." He had to stop and count
it..."...22 Turns."

"Very good. Any heavy injuries since the Pass started?" P'nal scribbled a
few notes as he
talked.

"Oh, yes. Nearly lost me a leg," Sh'lua replied cheerfully and patted his
scarred tight. Pants
covered the scar tissue, but if you looked him closely when he was tired,
you could see the
bluerider limping slightly.

"Shells, what happened?" The brownrider hadn't heard this story and he
found himself curious.

"The usual," Sh'lua shrugged. "We had wind from the flank. Galerith just
couldn't turn around
fast enough to flame it and wingmates weren't close enough. It landed on
us." His expression
grew distant. He could still remember the _pain_. Galerith had taken them
/between/ instantly
and probably saved his leg.

"Hmmm...well it's good to know you got through. Might be good for the young
ones to hear your
story as well." He filed that information away, sure it might be useful at
a later time. "They all
think they're invincible when they're not."

"The folly of the youth. They don't believe it until they go through it
themselves," Sh'lua shook his
head. For some reason he was thinking of one of his sisters. She had died
not long after his injury,
and much the same way.

Considering all of these things, P'nal decided to just come out with it.
"Do you ever see yourself in
any sort of leadership position?"

"Me? Faranth no! Me and authority won't do well," Sh'lua replied with
horror.

"Yeah that's the impression I got as well. Don't worry about it, we're not
all cut out to be leaders."
He sighed and scribbled at the bottom of the hide a big NO.

"Just leave the Searches for me," Sh'lua replied. "Now, didn't G'nir say
something about me starting
to teach that new bluerider, S'vin?"

"That could very well be. He's in the wings now and we could use more
searchriders. His blue has
shown promise then?" P'nal left that bit up to G'nir since it was his
business anyway. He just needed
to know when Sh'lua would not be doing his wing duties if he was doing
another assignment. That was
easy enough to figure out from the duty roster. "You going to take him
along with then?"

"Yes, I am," Sh'lua replied.

"Well I'll let you get back to duties but it was good to learn a bit more
about you anyway. Let me know
how the searching goes." Sitting back in his chair, he tried to remember
the next thing he planned to do
that day since this had proved a bust.

"All right. See you around, P'nal," Sh'lua said and got up from the chair.
