Description: Jeyme catches Sarban on his way to breakfast.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 5, day 10 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Lisadi, Felyna
Walking through the Great Hall, Sarban stood there looking around. It
was the headwoman's job to keep everything looking as they should
and she did well. Still he couldn't help but try to pay attention to things
himself at times. Satisfied with the room, he turned and began walking
through the rest of the Hold, looking for problems.
**Another day.** Jeyme sighed to herself as she surveyed her
reflection, her long slender fingers reaching up to fix errant strands
of hair that resisted the combs she'd delicately woven in. She'd been
living at Emerald Falls ever since she was nineteen, and now here she
was twenty-one and still without any real prospects towards a husband.
Sometimes it was easy for Jeyme to forget her true purpose for being
at the Hold because she would get wrapped up in having tea with the
ladies or going out for runner rides whenever she could steal an
opportunity. But then a letter would come, always a letter, and the
letter was always full of her father's disapproving tone. All of her
brothers were married off, why wasn't she? The letter would demand.
Satisfied with her appearance, Jeyme left her room in the prospects of
heading to the Dining Hall where she could grab a little something to
eat before deciding what to do with her day. Since her father had
never allowed her to take up a craft or learn any _real_ skills, Jeyme
often felt useless around the Hold and often envied the people she saw
bustling about.
"Oh, good morning Sarban." Jeyme inclined her head to the Steward when
she saw him approaching in the corridor.
"Good morning Jeyme," he answered. He'd seen the girl and knew her to
be one of the visiting ladies. She was well mannered certainly. "And how
are you today?"
"I'm well and how are you?" Jeyme inquired politely. Unlike some of
the Hold's people that Jeyme had dealt with she'd always found
conversing with Sarban rather easy.
"Had my klah, walked around a bit, now I'm considering breakfast."
Hopefully he wouldn't have any hard tasks to complete. He was already
trying to catch up the ledgers.
Flashing a soft smile, Jeyme gestured with one hand. "I was just
considering something to eat myself. Care to join me?" She offered,
thinking that some company and a bit of conversation over breakfast
would be nice.
Wondering if Lisadi was going to be up early today, he nodded and followed
her. When told the day's choices, he selected a few items, and then waited
for the drudges to bring it when it was ready. "So how much longer will you
be staying with us?"
Jeyme smiled at the question. She'd wondered the same thing more than
once herself. "I'm not sure, to be honest. I suppose until my father
gives up on his endeavor to see me married." The young lady lifted her
shoulders, resigned to doing whatever her father demanded of her.
Perhaps after she turned twenty-two he would realize that his dreams
were not to be and then she would actually get to decide what _she_
wanted to do.
"Well being married is a good thing. It affords a young woman a measure
of protection. You do want children, don't you?" Of course she did, but he
still had to ask.
"Oh, of course I do, and I _do_ want to find a husband, I'm just not
sure I'm as picky as my father." Jeyme knew her father wouldn't settle
for anything less than at least a cotholder. No crafter, or simple
Hold laborer was going to suffice.
"Well Corofel's too young for you that's certain. Has Lady Felyna introduced
you to any of the minor holders' sons?" Sarban was slightly curious.
Jeyme shook her head at the man's question as a drudge came along with
their food and set it before them, piping out from the kitchen, "No
she hasn't yet and I would be far too shy to ask her about it."
"Why? The Lady is quite approachable. Honestly, I'm sure she'd just love
to get you married. That's her...passion." Sarban almost laughed at himself
when he said it. He remembered when she had tried that on him once.
"Really?" Jeyme chuckled a little. "I just didn't want to take up the
Lady's time with something as trivial as my lack of husband." Although
to Jeyme's father there was nothing trivial about the matter at all.
"Lack of a husband means you are not protected and that's not trivial
at all. I'd suggest you bring it up with her as soon as you can." Sarban
was sending Felyna a gift, in his mind.
Jeyme grinned at the man's words, her lips quirked to the side as she
considered his suggestion. Yes, he was right, having no husband was no
trivial matter, at least in Jeyme's family. Making up her mind, Jeyme
made a mental note to seek Felyna out at her next opportunity to see
what insight the Lady would have.
