"Oh girl! Have I got gossip for you!" T'bel all but pounced on
Devyn's back as she walked across the bowl. He had been brimming with
the news all morning but none of his certain female friends had been
around at all. Oh, the humanity!
Devyn's eyes lit up when she heard T'bel's voice and she laughed when
she registered the topic of conversation, "Well follow me into the
Dining Hall and let's hear it!" T'bel was one of the people that Devyn
enjoyed most around the Weyr because he always had the best gossip.
"That I can do. I think Tes' mum has made the pasties today."
Teseada's mother was a master at making sweets. He tucked his hand in
the crook of her arm and walked quickly into the Dinny Hall. "It's so
cold today! You want to get the klah and I'll grab some cakes?"
"Sounds like a plan." Devyn agreed as she and T'bel parted ways
momentarily. Striding over to the service table, the greenrider
grabbed a couple of mugs of piping hot klah and brought it over to an
empty table where she and T'bel could sit and discuss his juicy piece
of gossip.
"So how have you been keeping yourself missy?" T'bel thought he'd
start with the small talk, just to prolong her curiosity.
Devyn smiled, she knew T'bel well enough to know his tactics, but it
was one of the things that made talking to the greenrider fun, "Oh you
know, nothing fabulous. Just wing drills, duties, and tending to
Ellyth. What have you been up to?"
"Oh, just mucking about, trying to get Fanth and G'wen better." His
smile belied the shadow that fell over his eyes. It had been a tough
couple of months for the greenrider and his weyrmate.
Reaching out Devyn patted one of T'bel's hands supportively, "I am
glad to hear they're doing better. I'm sure they'll be back to
themselves in no time."
"Of course." He leaned in and smiled wickedly. "So you ready for the
gossip now?"
The greenrider leaned in with a smile, "I thought you'd never get to
the good stuff!"
"Well, I gotta get your appetite worked up!"
Devyn narrowed her eyes at T'bel, "If it was any more worked up I'd be
strangling you right now, Teb," she fell back on using his nickname,
"so dish!"
"Okay, okay, you remember that fight between H'ren and J'lall? Well I
found out_why_they were fighting. Turns out there were both seeing
someone on the side....and it was the same guy! Silly boys, eh?" He
shook his head at his friends' folly. "I mean, come on,
C'trin_is_easy on the eyes but he's so not worth fighting over."
The greenrider laughed, imagining what a quandary the men had found
themselves in, "They should just all three date each other!" Devyn
exclaimed, chuckling as she pressed her cups to her lips.
"They should, but there's some sort of issue about not wanting to
share. You know how "J'lall is..he won't even share a bit of a nice
piece of cake, let alone having to wait his turn, if you know what I
mean." He rolled his eyes at his opinion of that one. "If he keeps
this up, he's going to lose both."
"You're right about that, he can't have two boyfriends and not allow
H'ren the same courtesy." Devyn shook her head, thinking that some
people made relationships so complicated.
"Well, and what happens when H'ren finds out that it's not just a
third wheel he has to deal with. Wonder what he's gonna think when he
finds out about the other six J'lall has all over the place." He gave
the girl a knowing look. "And that's just six that we know about!"
Devyn gave a low whistle, "Tell me about it! I don't know how he keeps
up with so many and doesn't accidentally switch up their names. It'll
catch up to J'lall some day and then H'ren's going to leave him for
sure." The greenrider had long ago accepted that social rules in the
Weyr differed from anywhere else on Pern, but still, you had to draw
the line somewhere.
"Or if they_really_mess things up and both of them find out
they're_both_shagging the same poor Holder boy up in Opal Hold."
T'bel sat back with a smug look on his face as he watched Devyn's
reaction to the best and most secret part of his gossip.
The woman's eyes widened and her hand flew to her mouth as she
laughed, trying to imagine said poor Holder boy and what he must think
to have two dragonriders visiting him. It had to be flattering
nonetheless. Still, Devyn felt it hard enough to keep up one
relationship, much less two at the same time!
"Exactly." T'bel nodded sagely.
Devyn was still smiling to herself and shaking her head as leaned back
in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest. She sure was glad
she was friends with T'bel or she'd never hear any of this juicy
gossip!
