She's gone

Writers: Roxanne
Date Posted: 26th December 2005

Characters: D'wrayt
Description: Jaela dies and Calyth goes /between/ in the middle of drills between Cyan and Azure. D'wrayt visits Jaela and starts to plan what has to be done to keep the Weyr intact while they are without a mature goldrider
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 6 of Turn 3
Notes: 2 of 2

Cyan wing would go first while Azure wing dropped the ropes. D'wrayt and his wing hovered above the Werybowl waiting for the other wing to get into position. He liked these type of drills because it gave him a chance to observe the wings in action, but there wasn't a chance of them being severely injured. The most serious injury would be an accidental burn or possibly a strained wing.

The signal was given and the mock threadfall began. The dragons whose riders were dropping the ropes were having as much fun as the riders were. About halfway through the drill, Treadoryth suddenly heard Calyth announce }:She's gone.:{ and saw the golden queen launch herself skyward and disappear /between/.

Both wings stopped their drill and returned to the Weyrbowl. Treadoryth took his rider to their ledge so that he could get to the infirmary faster before returning to the Weyrbowl. The Weyr was soon filled with the loud, mournful keening as the dragons noted the passing of their queen and the Weyrfolk learned of the death of their Weyrwoman.

D'wrayt was in shock. He knew what it meant when Calyth said she was gone before going /between/, but that didn't mean that he had to accept it right away. He didn't even have to tell his lifemate to take him to their weyr. The bronze knew what he was thinking. He had to see her one last time and make sure she was really gone.

The healers didn't try to stop him or console him as the Weyrleader strode purposely past them to the room where Jaela had been for the last few days. She looked like she was sleeping, but he knew she was gone. They would mourn her passing, but celebrate her life as she deserved to be remembered for all the good she had done. He would have to send out messages to all the Weyrs, but they would hear soon enough. They would have to arrange for the new goldrider to come sooner than they had planned and he hoped that she was Weyrwoman material as she was getting more than she bargained for.

He would have time to mourn the loss of his lover later, but for now he had to keep the Weyr together. His first task would be to talk to the headwoman about planning Jaela's funeral and then about getting the new goldrider in place. There was no time to mourn as he would like to. His dragon would have to mourn for him until the day was over.
