One Lonely Bluerider

Writers: Chelle, Len
Date Posted: 18th August 2011

Characters: N'ki, K'ral
Description: N'ki goes to speak with the bluerider that upset G'wen.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 6 of Turn 6

"So sweetheart, where are you going?" N'ki placed one muscular arm
directly in front of the young bluerider as he leaned against the wall
and stopped the boy's progress.

It was late afternoon and Threadfall had just ended not a candlemark
ago. N'ki was still in his fighting leathers and was hot and tired
from the Fall and from scrubbing all traces of thread ash from
Veriath's blue hide. But when he saw K'ral on his way to the Dining
Cavern he figured this was as good a time as any. Sylvian had only said
to get those two guys that had hurt G'wen at the party last restday
but as he saw it, why stop with them? The boy's father was his
wingmate and besides he wasn't going to stand for that sort of
disrespect towards any greenrider. They were the backbone of the Weyr
and no one, not a one of them, deserved to be treated like that.

"I'm going to the Dining Cavern and I'm not your sweetheart," he said
before trying to get away from the older rider.

"Yeah, that so? That's funny cos I heard all you want to do after a
Fall is shag. So let's say you and I get real friendly over in one of
the Flight rooms." Still smiling, N'ki repositioned himself so the
lad couldn't get away. The smile didn't reach his eyes.

It took K'ral a moment to realize what N'ki was saying and what it
meant and then his eyes changed. Despite N'ki being an older rider,
he was still a bluerider, the same as him. So that meant he only ranked
him by turns. "Sir, I appreciate what you think you're doing, but I just
had an honest conversation with a fellow rider. A rider, who I might
add, talked to me like I was dirt. There's no crime in what I said. Now
move aside."

"Despite what may have happened in that last Queen Flight, there_is_a
crime in telling a young, inexperienced and probably scared boy that
he's going to have to lay down under someone whether or not he wants
it. You try it and it's called rape, got it?" He got his face as
close to K'ral's as he could and stared him directly in the eyes.
"You do not tell any green rider that, you understand? There's a word
around here you'd better learn and you'd better learn it quick, kid,
or you're gonna be pretty lonely, and that's 'no.'" He leaned back
against the wall.

"No, it's called a greenflight. He's going to find himself in one soon, by
my count. And sugarcoating it for the weyrlings with soft gloves isn't going
to help them. It's a scary-as-shell experience and they need to know that.
Anyway, I probably didn't say any more than what the weyrlingmasters told
us not too long ago." K'ral looked back at N'ki with disgust. He hadn't been
asking G'wen for a good time only. He had genuinely liked the other boy before
he'd acted like such an ass. "If I were you, I would try to prepare him, because
if he's already this scared, that flight is going to tear him apart."

"Tell you what, kid." N'ki matched the disgusted look he was getting
with his own. "You let the Weyrlingmasters deal with that one.
There's a reason why E'naer and J'darin were chosen and no one came
knocking on your door. Got it? And from what I heard you were not
giving that kid a pep talk, you were threatening him because he hurt
your little ego by not leading you off to an empty Flight room. The
girl that told on you seems to think you were whinging about how you
were risking your life up in the skies and that was reason enough for
that boy to get on his knees for you."

"You weren't there so you only got one side of the story," he said simply.
"But you know what? I don't give a wherry's arse. The lot of them like to
cluck around worse than anything. You think what you like, but until _he_
spoke to me like he did, I was nice. Now I have duties to do. Good day."
He turned and headed down the hallway thinking of idiot greenriders and
blueriders who took everything at face value.

"Get used to your right hand. That's going to be your only company
for a long time," N'ki told his back. What a snotty little git. No
wonder that boy had turned his nose up at the offer. Seeing some
friends out of the corner of his eye, he grinned and walked over to
them. One was on transfer from River Bluff; he could pen a quick
note to his sister and have the greenrider take it back with her. He
also made a mental note to let other greenriders know what that one
was like. By the time he was done, that was going to be one lonely
bluerider.
