Description: The aftermath of Lyriath's flight
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 24 of Turn 6
The greenrider sighed and lifted his head, "Until four months from now
when she goes up again, and four months after that..." He shook his
head. "I'm okay. They were right, once she let herself be caught I
really didn't know what was going on until it was all over. It just
felt really awkward, coming to in bed with a stranger, no affection
there, and..." O'ryn broke off and fell into silence but finally
added, "A little reassurance would have been nice, but Faranth knows I
didn't get it from him."
"In four months, I will at minimum be there afterwards to show you how
a real man treats a lover," J'nor said. "Hopefully, Zoranaith will be
able to win so you won't have to worry about any of that," he added.
O'ryn nodded his agreement, "Even if he doesn't - which is still a
possibility, given how young he is - at least this first time is in
the past. The fear of the unknown is over and done. Now I just have to
make it through Blooding."
"I'm sure you'll be fine," J'nor said, his tone reassuring. "Lyriath
is a quick green, and she maneuvers well. I can't imagine her
failing." He would never say it aloud, but the thought of Blooding
scared him as well. He couldn't lose O'ryn, not after everything
they'd been through.
"I keep telling myself that, but history shows that almost no weyrling
class has ever made it through Blooding completely unscathed. There's
almost always a scoring, if not a death. I just don't want to be on
the wrong side of those odds." Even with the seriousness of the
discussion, O'ryn felt better just from the few minutes of contact.
He pulled back from J'nor to go sit on his couch, kicking his boots
off to lean back with his knees tucked up in front of him.
J'nor was sad to not have O'ryn in his arms, but he knew that if the
boy stayed there too long, he'd cross lines that he shouldn't. "Yeah,
and it's weird wishing that it's not you, because then it's as if
you're wishing your friends to death."
O'ryn nodded his agreement. His expression wasn't quite sad, more
along the lines of resigned. Threadfall was a reality of being a
dragonrider, same as flights. "Exactly. It's hard. At least this is
over. Are you going to be able to concentrate in classes now?" The
greenrider bit his lip as soon as the words were out. He didn't want
to admit that he'd bribed one of J'nor's classmates to keep an eye on
him.
J'nor's eyes narrowed slightly, wondering how O'ryn knew that he'd
been so distracted, but he shook it off, realizing that anyone who
knew him well could see how he'd been acting. "Yeah... yeah, I think
so."
"Good," the greenrider said simply, then nodded toward the open spot
on the couch. "You can make yourself at home, you know."
"Oh, sure," J'nor said, kicking off his boots and settling into the
couch next to O'ryn. "I wasn't certain that you weren't hungry," he
explained. "Just a sevenday until graduation..." he tipped his head
back, looking up at the ceiling.
"I am, but I really don't feel like braving the dining cavern right
now." O'ryn sighed, trying to be quiet about it, then a small smile
twitched at his lips as he shifted to lay across the couch with his
head pillowed on J'nor's leg. It was enough contact to be comforting
to him but hopefully not enough to get the bluerider in any sort of
trouble. "That's why Blooding has been on my mind - only a few more
days and I'll have that to face."
"Just be careful. We've been trained well," J'nor said, running his
fingers through O'ryn's hair absently. "And don't forget to breathe.
You don't want to be the weyrling that hyperventilates before fall
starts either."
O'ryn made a face, "I might be nervous, but I'm not going to be _that_
weyrling. No way."
"I probably will be," J'nor confessed. "Either that or I'll be the
weyrling who breaks an arm trying to toss a firestone sack."
The greenrider looked up at him and shook his head, "What, are we
going to bet on which of us will get what injuries? Just my luck I'll
dislocate my shoulder trying to make a catch or something ridiculous
like that." It was easier to think of that than imagining being
scored.
"Well, I would much rather you hurt yourself that way, then I could
massage you all better," J'nor said, his voice seductive.
}:Mine?:{ Came the sleepy voice of Zoranaith. }:It's almost curfew
time, and I'd like to get something to eat.:{
J'nor swore softly under his breath. "It's getting late, Zora needs to
eat before curfew," he said apologetically.
O'ryn groaned, but slowly shifted to sit back up next to the other
weyrling. "One of the few excuses I'll let you get away with," he
admitted. "He's more important than I am. I'll be alright."
"I'll see you tomorrow at nooning meal, I promise," J'nor said,
hugging O'ryn quickly before heading off to leave.
