Apprentice Encour crossed his arms across his chest and sneered with
satisfaction. "Well. Look who finally decided to walk through the door."
Oresthon just sighed. Just his luck, when everything had gone so well, and
then someone spots him sneaking back into the hall.
The senior apprentices voice sounded like an almost perfect imitation of
the Master of Apprentices, though a good half octive higher. "Do you have
any idea just how late you are?"
"Erh, no?" Oresthon replied uncertainly.
Well, then, the poor idiot wouldn't be the wiser! "They're about to look
for you, you know. But I covered for you. Not sure I should have."
"That was very kind of you, thank you," Oresthon replied. He had a nasty
feeling that he was going to have to pay for that.
"I was very kind, wasn't I," Encour grinned. "And now it's your turn to
returnt he favor."
"Of course," Oresthon sighed.
"Good man." That was the answer Encour liked to hear. "You have Master
Chardic's chemistry class tomorrow, don't you?"
"Yes, I have," Oresthon replied. He was more than bit worried. What kind
of trouble he was going to get into now?
"You know that little notebook he always keeps writing in?"
"Yes," Oresthon replied curtly. This didn't sound promising at all. Encour
slipped an arm around his shoulder. "I want to borrow it for a while.
You can help me get it, right?"
"I'm not a thief," Oresthon said with a scowl.
"Neither am I," Encour said innocently. "Hence the word 'borrow'. No, I
don't want you to even _touch_ that book, Oresthon, I swear."
"What I'm s'posed to do then?" Oresthon asked.
"Just hang around after class for a minute and distract him. Get him to
take you in the back room to answer a question about the chemical
collection or something. You'll find a good way, I'm sure."
"Sure, I can do that. I'm good at bugging teachers with questions,"
Oresthon said, relieved it wasn't anything worse.
"I knew you were the right man for the job," Encour grinned. "Remember,
you have to keep throwing questions at him. It's going to take me a
minute to get over there from my class. You got it?"
"Yes, I got, I'm not _stupid_," Oresthon replied cheekily.
"Just make sure you're not suddenly stupid tomorrow." The senior
apprentice gave him a rather hard slap on the back for emphasis, though
his smile never left his face.
"Ouf!" Oresthon rubbed his back and wondered if he was ever going to learn
how to keep his mouth shut.
Encour gave a bit more gentle clout on the shoulder as he turned to walk
away. "I'll see you after class tomorrow. Or better yet, I better not
see you."
"Okay," Oresthon just sighed. Then he realized he had to run or be late from
dinner.
