Taljin found the hunter down by the stables and approached the man a
bit warily. He'd never been particularly fond of the man and his
interest in his sister Talmina had annoyed him. Still, his parents
trusted him, and they had very limited options.
"Zanen, a moment of your time?" he asked briskly, raising an arm to
get his attention.
He turned away from the runner he was admiring. "Sure."
"You know things haven't been going well for Talmina." Taljin stated,
the man had dropped in every few sevendays since the attack to check
on her. "My parents feel it's only going to get worse if she stays
here. They'd like to commission you as an escort to the Weyr."
Taljin was certainly to the point. "They're sending her to the Weyr?"
Zanen asked.
The journeyman nodded, "They don't see another option at the moment."
She couldn't stay at the Hold, and no one would every accept her for
marriage now that her face was cut up and she was labeled a whore.
"Does she want to go?"
**Did it matter?** he didn't voice his thought though, Zanen might
get it in his head to champion for his sister and they didn't need
anymore problems. "She'll go. She knows it's necessary."
That wasn't the answer he was looking for, but it was probably the
best he was going to get from Taljin. "I'd be glad to escort her."
"I'll be coming along as well." Taljin added. Despite his sister's
reputation, the healer had assured his parents that she was still
virtuous, even with the attack, and it wouldn't do for her to accompany
the hunter by herself. Though Zanen had always been kind to her after
the attack, he could easily take advantage of his sister once they
were alone for the extended trip.
"Of course you will." There was a bit of grumbling in Zanen's voice.
They were throwing her out for having a bad reputation, yet they were
still trying to keep up appearances. That, or worse, they didn't trust
him.
Taljin caught the tone and realized his father had been right to
insist that he go to the Weyr. It would disrupt his work for at least
a month, but it needed to be done. It would be the last gift he would
ever give to his sister. "Is two days enough time to set your affairs
in order? The sooner the better as far as we are concerned."
Zanen thought for a moment. There really wasn't much holding him here
but a few friendships. It was time to move on, and this was a perfect
opportunity. "Two days is fine."
